    ...pain relief questions.

    1) The label on Anbesol says it should only be used for seven days. Is this because you're supposed to see a dentist within seven days, or because extended use of Anbesol may cause nerve damage to the areas where it's applied...?

Just curious. I have a consultation on the 29th to see about getting my goddamned wisdom teeth taken out, but I won't actually be able to have it done until late February-- so there's a chance I'll be guzzling Anbesol like it was cheap domestic beer (which is also an excellent painkiller).

    2) Why does Vicodin have an expiration date on it? What happens after the expiration date? If I take some expired Vicodin, am I going to grow a tail or a sixth finger or something?

If anyone has any information on these inane topics, I'd appreciate it. Especially if you are a dentist, or know one.

    OUCH BK!

I imagine like any drug or herb repeated use of it would build a natural resistance against it. Also, I imagine anything that numbs your gums used over a long amount of time is probably not good.

good luck, sounds like you gone need it buddy!:(

Can't help with the drugs, but I'm in the same boat with the wisdom teeth. Was supposed to have them removed last week, but had a cold, so the oral surgeon refused to go through with it.

Just letting you know I'm with you ;).

after the expired date, most drugs lose potency. according to an article i read about penicillin, drugs are good up to about 12 months AFTER the expiration date printed. I just did a search, but can't find the article...

i doubt you'll grow a sixth finger or a tail... but if you do, let us know.

My mom isn't a pharmicist but she owns a company which works with drugs and this is what she told me:

Q1. Why do you stop using Anbesol or other drugs after a certain amount of time?

A1. Because drugs that have this warning are more than likely addictive. Here's an example of what happened to a close family member, there was this over the counter decongestant nasal spray my sister was using, it said not to use more than 5 days and no more than twice a day. She ignored both and soon she had to use it all the time to get her nasal passages free from congestion and after about a month she had to go to the doctor to get a special nasal spray to get her off the stuff.

A1. Drugs with these warnings may also just take away symptoms and you may have a serious problem that is why you only need to use them only a certain time length, like if you keep using Doan's on a back ache and you have a torn muscle sure it takes away the pain but you need the doctor to help fix that problem. After two weeks if your back is still hurting, you more than likely need a doctor's help.

This is why there are these warnings on certain types of medications.

Q2. Why is there an expiration date on medication?

A2. The expiration date means the drugs are no longer good, well actually like rockHEAD said they start to lose their potency but eventually lose it all or most of it after time.

    Hope this helps. :)

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out back in November 2000. I'll never forget being at the dentist and getting shot up with the "knockout" anesthetic. I remember still seeing the dentist and his assistants (although blurry because I had my contacts out) then the next thing I know I'm at my parents with a mouth full of gauze in the back bedroom.

My mom still tells me that I looked like Frankenstein's monster when I was wheeled out of there. I felt like I had an alien abduction due to the "missing time". However, I'm definitely glad that I got "put to sleep" to have this done. I couldn't even imagined how painful it would have been to be conscious and have this done to you.

I can't really remember much about the drugs aka painkillers. I took them until I ran out and I was also given some suppositories (which I used like 2 of those). I don't think that you will get addicted, but I'm no medical expert.

However, the big thing that you will have to deal with and worry about is getting a dry socket. Let me tell you something: you have never experienced a pain like getting one of these babies. Fortunately, I didn't get one but it was described to me by an oral surgeon friend of mine that made me damn sure that I didn't want one. It was described to me as having a root canal done but being conscious & it being 10 times worse!

You see the thing about a dry socket is that for several days, you will have an opening where the wisdom tooth used to be. That area is very susceptible to anything especially food. It has to be given enough time to heal or you'll be in a major world of hurt. It is sorta like having a broken leg and then breaking it again while it is healing. Not a fun thing.

Now...aren't you looking forward to getting this done?:D

didnt have the dry socket problem but sticking a syringe down my gums into the vacant space that my wisdom teeth use to be really sucked...

Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate the information. I gave up on the Tylenol and Anbesol yesterday and took half a Vicodin-- pain gone. It's not too bad this morning either.

I'm just looking forward to getting it over with. Three of them, I think, won't be a problem, but my upper right side (the painful one) I can tell is gonna be a b****. The second molar up there is pushed out to the side. Not a good sign.

I am gonna request all the drugs to which I'm entitled. Then I'm gonna slip the dentist a fiver and say, "Anything else you wanna add to that prescription, there's plenty more where this came from!" :D

I did some reading this week and did hear about "dry sockets". and I am steeling myself for a week to ten days of a liquid diet.

Of course by some standards I've been on a liquid diet since I turned 21... ;)
