Driving a long distance - rather during the day or at night?

I prefer to drive at night - less traffic on the highways. What about you?

I've made the Minnesota-Texas drive a bunch of times. I like and dislike both. I feel 'safer' in the daylight in case I have car trouble. As you mentioned, at night less traffic, less construction, less distraction.

I drive to Houston and back to Austin once a week. I problaby prefer driving at night, I have a screen in my dash hooked up to my ipod so I watch a lot of tv shows on the road.

A bowl, a beer, maybe a bite to eat, a little sunny or curb, and I'm good to go. Look out for me.

On regular road trips to Houston, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and in a week or two, to Memphis, I always head out around 3-4am. That gives me enough time to let enough drunk drivers go home or crash and still lets me enjoy very little traffic outside of truckers. I don't mind truckers because 99% of them know when to move over, slow down, etc. On the return trip, I'll drive "whenever" I need to.

I'm also more of a night owl and probably enjoy driving the most late at night as a result.

    I prefer night. Less traffic.

Gets kinda sketchy in the country though. I remember having to pull over in Wyoming because of all the deer in the road on a pitch back night.

This brings up another disadvantage of night driving sometimes (especially in the summer) : bugs. Driving at night, my windshield sometimes looks destroyed with all the bug splatter.

I'll make sure to stay off 290 and/or I10 at night? Really? You watch a lot of TV on an iPod while you drive?

    Night driving hands down.

And I'm talking 1AM-5AM, not just after sunset. Heat is never an issue nor slow motorists clogging up the fast lane. I play chill music, focus on the road, and drive in short bursts of speed when there's a nice long stretch. Time seems to go by so much faster this way.

I have a grand tourer car so it makes night driving a great experience.

night- less cars, and the night just gets me in the zone. I'll plug in my ipod and just sing- another reason I like to drive at night. harder to see me and fewer cars to give me weird looks when I'm singing while driving. I drive 3 to 6 hours each week. usually about 1 or 2, 3 hr, round trips.

However, where I drive, there are sometimes a lot of deer in the area, so I still have to be a little alert at night. Also, it is harder to see speed traps at night. Cops are getting so tricky with those Dodge chargers in all different colors. I got pulled over 3 or 4 weeks ago by a maroon one camped out with his lights off. Got away with a warning and ended up talking about the Rockets with the officer! lol.

Best time is between 8pm-11pm. I'm not too tired and the roads are fairly clear. Unfortunately, night driving is tough for me. I have really really bad vision corrected with contact lens so I have problems with halos and star-bursts.

Towards the end of my college career when I was commuting between Atlanta and Houston, I hated driving after 11pm.

In the spirit of this thread, I will embark on a 400 mile night drive in winter conditions in an hour or two...unfortunately, might miss part of the Rockets game because of that, but...there is League Pass Mobile...hmm .

I prefer leaving around 430-5am and get there earlier in the day.

Not on a ipod, on the 8 inch screen in my dash that syncs with my ipod. I watch sitcoms that I've already seen so I don't really have to pay to much attention to them, I mainly listen.

Responsible drivers don't use their cell phone while they're driving. ;)
