What did "Hair of the Dog" mean before it took on its popular meaning, and when was it coined?

Hold-it...before you look for it, just take a guess when it was coined...I'll drink a beer for anyone who guesses to within a century.

Hair of the Dog who bit you, originally had medicinal meaning. Place hair from the dog who bit you into your wound.

Now get this, it become an expression for a hangover cure in 479 BC.

    Those Roman's could drink! lol
