Tomorrow during the draft lottery, pay particular attention to where the Rockets card comes up.

We could draft anywhere from 1-3, or 9-12. If we get past the number 9 pick and you do not see the Rockets card, then we are in the top 3.

    GO ROCKETS !!!!!!

So you're saying that if we're not between #9-#12, we're automatically in the top three? And we can't be like #4-#8?

    That is correct-
The new draft is sorta complicated but think about it like the lotto. Basically what they have is a whole bunch of numbered balls, and come selection time, the machine "sucks up" 4 different balls. This way, with the total number of balls they have, this leaves 1001 different 4number combinations (ie- 1,12,50,56 or 4,79,34,100). Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations. The Clippers, of course, get the most, at 250 different combinations. If one of their combinations come up, then they get the pick. The bulls have less at 200( I think) and so on and so on. The Rockets have 17 different combinations. This leaves them a 17/1000 (the extra one is just thrown out) possibility of getting the number one pick. After that is chosen, they choose the numbers 2 and 3 selections. As one can imagine, depending on who gets the first pick(and thus the number of combinations taken out of consideration), the Rockets have a slightly higher percentage of getting the number 2 and 3 pick, but it is still like 2% or so. After the third pick, they just go in order of record. So
    a) the Rockets could get either picks 1-3
    or
b)picks 9-12.....they would be moved down if someone behind them, i.e.-Boston was fortunate enough to move into the top 3, cause everything shifts down a bunch.
There is no way the can end up at 4-8, though, barring a trade. What I am looking for is to see if the order from 12 down goes as planned, and then to pray to the basketball Gods that I don't see the Rockets at number 9.

    DaneB -- exactly.

Rockets are the 9th "seed" if you will -- 9th worst record. The lottery does nothing more than draw for the Top 3 picks... after those three teams are randomly selected, 4 through 13 goes by worst record to best record of the teams that are left.

So if the three random teams are selected from teams in 1-8, Rockets have the 9th pick. IF any teams after the 9th seed are selected in the top 3, that pushes the Rockets to 10th (if one is drawn) or 11th (two drawn) or heaven forbid the damn near impossible 12th pick if the three random teams selected are 10, 11, 12 or 13 (the odds must be astronomical).

So bottom line.... if David Stern or Russ Granik have opened the envelopes 13, 12, 11, 10 and 9 and the Rockets have not been called out, then the Rockets are in the Top 3.

They announce the picks 13 to 1 so here's a Lottery Watching Guide:

[*] When they call #13 it should be Orlando. If it's NOT Orlando that pick was selected in the top 3. Ditto for the ones following...
[*] #12 needs to be Dallas.
    [*] #11 should be Boston.
[*] #10 should be Orlando again (via Denver)

(If you've gotten to this point then no surprises... say if you go down the list and they call the Rockets #10 instead of Orlando then Orlando made the Top 3, which pushed the Rockets down)

[*] All is well at this stage, #9 should be the Rockets... if it's not, payday.

It will be sooo boring if the Rockets get in the top 3 without having to make a trade. [IMG]

Cheer up grummet, we'll land the #1 pick then trade Cato, Drew, the exception, our dancers, a ham-on-rye, and a box of cracker jacks for the #2 pick. Yes, we'll have Kenyon and Stromile on our team. How we'll end up playing them who knows, but we'll figure that out later. Then with our #9 pick, we'll pick up Darius Miles. The NBA will then change the rules and regulations to now include 11 foot goals because we'll have a team of players that go up but never come down.

So many of you are so ready to get rid of Kelvin Cato, yet in many of these scenarios (except those involving Olowakandi) we pick up no true 5 in return. Who's gonna play 5? Hakeem is a warrior but an aging one. Where is Kevin Kunnert, Paul Mokeski, Otto Moore, Dick Cunningham, Zaid Abdul-Aziz, or especially Mo Malone when you need them!!!

I'd love to have Kenyon Martin or Stromile Swift and Darius Miles but nobody on the draft board can do the job that Cato does. Who's going to fill that hole? It's fine to dream but keep your toes, at least, on the terra firma.....

This is a GREAT PLACE... A LOT OF FUN!

Wow, an Otto Moore reference! Back in high school, my best friend and I would go to games and stand up and scream "Ottooooo" whenever he'd score or block a shot. It wasn't very often, but for some reason, we both really liked the guy. Go figure.
