what happened to all the jay williams hype, everyones talking about a SF if we cant get Yao, i think the next best choice if Yao's not possible is jay williams, he's the best player in the draft and he's proven! u have to select the best player available and if we cant fill our void at center, there u go! we can still package players for a good SF or package our 15 pick and players to move up and draft a SF, check it.........backcourt of steve and cat with eddie and jay, runnin and gunnin, whatchall think?
I think mobley made his & stevie's point clear by saying that drafting jay williams would be disrespectful to them. and i think that the two best players on the team and maybe the best backcourt in the league have an opinion.
No offense meant, aL-etc., but looking at your moniker gives me a headache. I think we have 2 excellent guards already, and don't need to use THE #1 PICK on another. Maybe for a trade. Going to go take something for the pain, adios.
since jay williams is proven i'd like to know what nba team he has played for? was it before the draft or before college, surely he couldn't be drafted again. picking williams would solve none of our problems and actually create more.
Greetings all, I agree with Alfab about J.W. I would take it even one step further.Although the situation with Yao Ming seems to be looking better and better I still have serious reservations about both Yao as a player and his potential situation(s) both now but mainly in the coming years. I feel that there is one and only one player in this draft that is as close to a sure thing as you can possibly get. Unfortunately the only two positions he could possibly play are where we have our best two players. In Jay Williams you have (IMHO) a player who has dominated college ball and held his own(some say more than that)against the top players in our leauge(olympic warmups).I am not a "Dukie" for I actually was rooting for them to lose this year because I was sick of seeing them on T.V. I see in J.W. a player who I think has a good chance to be at least as good as S.F. if not better. He is a player that is lightning quick, a disrupter on defense, drives and finishes at the rim very well, has a crossover that is at least as good as Stevies and most, most, most importantly is as CLUTCH a shooter as I have seen at the end of games(freethrows notwithstanding). I think he could be a cross between the best of Sevie(offense) and Baron Davis(defense) though maybe not as good as Davis on D as Baron is one of the best defenders(on and off the ball) in the league. I have heard people say that you need to take risks to be the best as people such as Bill Walsh and others have said. However there is a difference between taking a calculated risk(something that has a good chance of working out (without too many unknown variables) and a shot in the dark(spending your whole paycheck on lotto tickets). Although Ming falls somewhere inbetween I am not sure which side he is closest to. I subscribe to the theory that you take the best player available no matter the position and fit them on your team unless you are a close to a championship and just need one thing to put you over the top. I feel that as of right now J.W. is the best plyer in this draft. More I feel that his best case scenario(upside) is not that far from Mings and that his worst case scenario is miles and miles above Yaos. I think at a bare minimum that J.W. will be a semi all star and I think that you find a way to fit a player like on to your team. I think with two players that can drive, shoot, and dish that he and Stevie could play together very well. If Krause really wants Ming I would offer the #1 and the Drew obligations for Curry and the #2(J.W.). Then take the best big at 15 and take a project in the 2nd. I feel that J.W. has a GOOD chance at superstardom. I was almost afraid to make this my first post because I have seen the Ming questioners insulted at almost fanatical levels. Nonetheless my warmest greetings to all the B.B.S. This is by FAR the best team fansite I have found and what ever is 2nd is not even close. WAR ROCKETS
rfrocket- welcome to the site. i agree with your points about williams, i think he has a chance to be an excellent player in the nba just not our team. he offers nothing that the rockets currently need and that's the only problem. we have a better, proven version of him in steve francis and cat is up and coming. i don't question his talent and as good as a backcourt of him and steve could be, it won't get us anywhere in the playoffs. this is why we need to gamble with the upside that ming brings at a position we actually need help in.
Thanks BigM I do agree that a dominating center would be great to have if we can be sure that Ming will become one. I am just worried about a few things such as the fact that ming got backed down and overpowered by a center that not only said he was taking it easy on him to try and make him look good but turned around and went to the chicago camp and scored 0 points, something like 4-6 rebounds and fouled out in about 14-16 minutes in his first game against 2nd rounders and NBDLer`s. I also remember a fan of his teams(Oregon I think) who would be biased towards him say that he totally sucked as a player.I know jet lag could probably make you sluggish and throw off your timing but I don`t think it would affect your strength that much. Also another thing that worries me is the fact that Ming himself said that Wang is the much better defender of the two. That is downright scary IMHO. I just wonder if Ming were only say 7`2 or 3 if everyone would be making this big a fuss over him. I know people will say that he`s not 7`2 or 3 but I look at it this way. Say you take someone 7`1 or so(Garnett) who may be 4 inches or so shorte but has an armspan that is 2 or 3 inches longer than Mings. That would make his reach(which is really the most important thing IMHO) within an inch or two or three of Yao`s. If this person has more athletisism or more hops or is quicker I think it would not be that hard to alter or even stuff his "unblockable shot". From the admittedly small footage I have seen of Ming(Olympics and Chicago workout) it seems to me that although he seems fairly quick for a man his height I just do not see much hops or athletisism in his game. I think that a lot of the more athletic defenders in the league would be able to greatly alter a lot of his shots. Also, when a man his size puts the ball on the floor to drive I can see him getting stripped a lot. I am just not sure if he will ever be as dominant offensively or defensively as everybody seems to think he is sure to be. I think too often people grt wrapped in measurables(height, weight, 40 time etc...). there have been many players in basketball, baseball, football, etc... that have been great players despite their measurables or busts despite them. I would pick an ultra-athletic shorter player over a not so athletic taller player anytime. Yao Ming seems like an excellent human being and seems to have a great work ethic which is something this team could surely use an example of but for me when a player has as many variables that can go wrong thrown into the Yao equation I just would not spend the number 1 pick on him. On the needing a dominant center to win a championship issue if you look back at the last 20 yrs only a handfull of teams have won it. Some had dominating centers and some did not. Of course if both Ming and J.W. reach their full expected potential it would be a no brainer, chose Ming. I am just not sure if can or will be able to do that.
I don't think CD and Rudy are even considering JW. He's not in the cards. He will not be a Rocket. Somehow, I think they may regret it. The kid is good.
Mucho thanks for the compliment Possum. Sorry if it takes me a while to reply but i`m very new to the computer world. I just purchased my first one a couple of months ago. I tried to post a few days ago but I was having a hard time figuring out a couple of things such as how to make the bar return to make a new paragraph(Doh). Had to ask a 16 year old that I know how to do it(enter button). aaaDuh. Did not want to make one gigantic paragraph and piss off the more P.C,(paragraphically(is that a word) correct) members. Plus i just grduated from a 1 to a 2 finger typer I`ve been following the BBS since I first discovered it about this time last year. Mostly at the public library. Got tired of waiting behind all the kiddies waiting to print out Dragonball Z pictures so I went out and bought my own. Again thanks for the hello and Major props to Clutch for running the best fansite on the net. It is so much better than listening to the AM and reading the chronicle(really gone down since the post went under). 1000 times the information and most of the posters have really intelligent comments most of the time.
I love this site as well. I get no coverage in Austin. It's the only thing that keeps me being the type of fan I want to be.
The Rockets world would not end if they draft Jay Williams. He would take all of Mooch's minutes and eat into Steve's and Cat's as well, which is not a bad thing. The Rockets could start Steve at the 1 and Jay at the 2. That lethal offensive combination would force the other teams to match up to us. Williams should also help the Rockets perimeter defense. The Rockets not picking Yoa at this point is highly improbable though.
