The cat's out of the bag. The best cure for an allergy to felines is ... LSD?

Dr. Andrew Weil, a best-selling author and longtime proponent of alternative health remedies, says on "60 Minutes" that he cured his lifelong allergy to cats by using the hallucinogenic drug.

"I took LSD. I was in a wonderful outdoor setting. I felt terrific and, in the midst of this, a cat came up to me and crawled into my lap," he says on the CBS show, which airs Sunday (7 p.m. EST).

"I did not have an allergic reaction to it and I never did since."

Weil says he believes some allergies are learned.

"That gave me the idea that (taking LSD) would be a great way to teach people to unlearn allergies," he says. "If the drugs were legal, I think I would recommend that some patients do it."

Dr. Weil is a really brilliant guy. His research on natural healing and alternative therapies are very well-respected. He is a Harvard educated physician and I've read lots of his stuff.

Now, that having been said, all I can say about his LSD thing is, "Oh, brother."

This is typical of many former hippies. Cut back on dairy but pump up the LSD! Geez. I also believe that some allergies are learned or can be unlearned. My wife is living proof but she didn't need LSD to cure her allergy to cats, just will power.

I like Dr. Weil alot, but this is reaching.

This was on 60 Minutes tonight and my wife and I just happened to be watching the show (Sunday nights are practically owned by FOX in my house... with the exception of "King of the Hill" and that's when 60 Minutes was playing). When he said that LSD bit I was like, "Uh, O.... K"

Anyhow, the first part of the segment built him up while the second half tore him apart. My goodness... I know 60 Minutes seeks controversy but they asked bold questions implying he was a "con man", in this for money, does no research, etc. They ran some independent studies on the products he was pushing and they didn't meet up to the standards on the label and they hung that one on him.

Early on in the show they interviewed a patient who credited Dr. Weil for helping him fight cancer and that his tumors' growth had slowed significantly -- that he was in the best health he's been in for years.

And when they closed the show, they did it by simply saying that person just had a flare-up of the cancer.

Whew! Sports Illustrated works for me.... remind me never to take a 60 Minutes interview.

I'm sorry I missed it. That is typical 60 Minutes, though. Like everything in health, Weil is for some and not others. I can tell you that most of us would be a lot healthier if we followed his views of wellness (not counting the LSD [IMG] ) for the most part.

He is definitely wierd. No question. But, he is also very gifted at what he does and his ideas about eating, exercise and alternative health are outstanding.
