GM says 'surgery seems likely' on guard's ankle Associated Press EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Doug Christie, who missed a practice and a game this week, was placed on the injured list Saturday by the Orlando Magic before their game against the New Jersey Nets. Orlando general manager John Weisbrod said the shooting guard has bone spurs in his left ankle and "surgery seems likely." Christie didn't practice with the team on Thursday and then missed the Magic's 111-89 home victory Friday night over the New York Knicks. He didn't travel with the team, instead making his own flight arrangements on Saturday. Christie, acquired Jan. 10 in a trade with Sacramento for Cuttino Mobley, has been unhappy recently since his role with the Magic has been greatly reduced. "I met with Doug this afternoon in New Jersey," Weisbrod said Saturday. "He has concerns in regards to bone spurs in his left ankle and his ability to play. In conjunction with our medical staff, he will seek further consultation and surgery seems likely." To fill the roster spot, the Magic activated center Mario Kasun, who has been on the injured list since Jan. 18 because of tendinitis in his knee. Kasun missed 21 games. Christie was disappointed to be dealt away by Sacramento and took a few days to report to the Magic. He was put into the Orlando starting lineup, but lost that spot when Steve Francis was moved to shooting guard and rookie Jameer Nelson took over at the starting point guard. "I think as professionals you've got to keep your focus on the court and try to continue to get wins," Nelson said before Saturday night's game. "You're going to have some off-the-court issues, no matter what it is. I think we've done a good job of staying focused." Christie played a total of 23 minutes in his last three games. In 21 games with Orlando, he has averaged 5.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Overall, he has averaged 6.6 points per game -- his worst production in a decade. The Magic won two straight at home before starting a three-game trip at New Jersey. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2006057
I agree, but I think it was more about getting playing time for Jameer Nelson. But they should have just let Mobley's contract expire at the end of the season, now they are stuck with Christie's contract...
It looked dumb when they first announced it. But, at least they could reason that Mobley would have ditched them, so it'd be better to get something. I'm not sure if Christie even counts as something anymore.
You're right, JV. Still, you'd have to think (I'm sure you're agreeing) that Doug Christie was not the only deal out there for them. Mobley is a solid player, and you'd think an Eastern Conference (Atlantic?) team or two would have risked Mobley's contract status (opting out) thinking he might be recruited to stay with that team. Man, oh man, Orlando, Orlando. First Doug Christie, ending up with an I-don't-give-a-crap Steve Francis, who will likely end up on yet another team next year.
Wouldn't they have traded for a center or something if it was "just to get Nelson play time"? They're pretty deep at the 1,2,3.
Ha, serves Wisebrod right. This trade was dumb right from the start. So what if Mobley walks this summer, let him walk, don't trade him for an old guy that will make 9M the next couple years. The Magic were playing well with Mobley, I wonder where they would be if they still had him.
Christie to the Injured List with a case of a broken heart: Is there a more pathetic mental image than of Doug sitting in a dark room, watching the damned video crying to himself? http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sports_story.asp?intID=3841884
in the boxscore for Doug Christie should be DNP-whipped "Doug is distraught," wife Jackie Christie said. "We have a farewell video that the Kings gave us before we left, and I'll find him sitting there watching it, and he gets all choked up. I'll tell him, 'Doug, you have to stop.' But everything was so special there." what a weepy whiny wuss totally bossed around by his ugly nutcase of a wife.
How about Christie sitting in the back of the bus on his cell phone with his wife for the entire ride? And she is following right behind him!!
