Are double band routers much better than single frequency wireless routers? I have several laptops, it seems if I am watching a movie on one if affect other laptops. Will double band solve this issue by separating traffic on two frequencies? Also I had to restart the router if net traffic is bad, is there a good way to resolve this?
Go into your router's admin page. Usually something like 192.168.1.1, and set up QOS rules so that bandwidth is allocated correctly. You can also try changing the channel your router is operating on. Please do not operate on channel 6, as it is the most common, and other signals will bleed through that. That should help you out.
I didn't want to make a new thread for this. What's a good affordable router. I'm in my 4th year at university and this is my first year getting internet at my apartment. So what would be good for maybe for 2 computers in a 2 bedroom apartment? ISP is Time Warner.
Are you a gamer? Do you stream HD content from your PC to say your TV or something? Since your'e a student, get an Amazon Prime account and get this router http://www.amazon.com/Medialink-Wir...U60M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314908891&sr=8-1
No gaming. It will be only used for basic school work and some Netflix on the wii possibly. The one you posted is $10-15 out of my range. How is this one. http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Wirele...9K6E/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1314912084&sr=8-7
That's a good one for what you want. Wii wifi is 803b....super slow and old tech. Any wifi router will be good for that. I would go with that one. Stay away from Linksys.
Yes, stay away from Linksys. However, I've had bad luck with Belkins. My best of luck has come from Netgear's, and Apple Airport Extremes (pricey)
Unlike other posters, I highly recommend the Linksys WRT54GL. After you reflash it to DD-WRT or Tomato, the router is a tank. Look up the reviews on various sites, it's a legendary product. Note: there are many variations that look exactly like it (blue), make sure it has the "L". http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Linksys-WRT54GL-Wireless-G-Broadband-Compatible/dp/B000BTL0OA I use a Cisco-Linksys E3000 w/DD-WRT myself. Its simultaneous dual band feature allows me to wirelessly connect and stream several devices in a neighborhood crowded with many networks. You can find a used one for just over $50 if you look around.
Good point, I've used DDR-WRT before and it pretty much improves the hell out of your network. For anyone who is interested , this is a good read http://toasterdog.com/lifehacker/know_your_network_complete_guide.pdf
