Employees at as many as 16 area Starbucks were greeted Sunday morning with stores whose doors had been glued shut, police said, in objection to the ubiquitous chain's "corporate coffee."

Protesters placed glue in the locks at several stores in central and western Houston and left behind fliers.

"I bet you are wondering why your local Starbucks is closed this morning," one read, according to Houston Police Department spokesman Alvin Wright. Attempts to reach officials with Starbucks on Sunday were unsuccessful.

"This dispute appears to be part of an ongoing conflict between these individuals and the chain," Wright said.

Employees were able to unseal the locks and opened for business as scheduled, Wright said.

Boy, those protestors sure showed the evil Starbucks! I am sure this event will leave quite the lasting impression! Millions of dollars lost in revenue! How is Starbucks going to comeback from this traumatic event?

These protestors actually make me wonder how much free advertising Starbucks has had from their antics. Maybe the Starbucks people are gluing their OWN doors. Hmmmm :)

that's hillarious. Does that mean that I can attempt to cancel my finals by gluing the doors to the lecture hall shut??? that would be the day!

Was anyone else at UT a few years back when they glued a bunch of the locks shut in the classroom buildings? It was supposed to start a strike, or be part of some day where the staff/students didn't go to school in protest of low wages. In Welch Hall, once someone got the door open, we all worked anyway (science people... we'd rather just go and get our work done). The locks didn't get fixed for nearly a year, so we couldn't use our exterior keys (those of us who had them :) ). In other words, no matter what time of night it was, there was a door hanging wide open somewhere.

    Idiots.

Like the employees - the only ones who got any kind of annoyance out of this at all - are the power behind the 'corporate coffee'.

Some people just have too much time on their hands.

I was at UT when we did a virtual walkout. Since it is illegal for state employees to strike we had to do it virtually. We all wore black in protest. Like the students gave a ****. lame.

Yeah, I encountered this on my way to work this morning. My usual Starbucks was glued shut, so I had to go right across the street to the other one.

Actually, doesn't Starbucks treat its employees pretty well? Shouldn't they be gluing the doors at Wal-Mart or something?

I saw some episode on MTV about Senior pranks at highschools, and locking doors was one of the crappier ones that took place, Shoot even our school did that, the funny part is that our bosnian janitor just yanked em open, so yes we were all at schoool at 8:45 AM

Bunch of stupid people, get a life. Don't they know that Starbucks are just offering another option? That no one is forcing them to go to Starbucks?

This reminds me of the movie "You've got mail" starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, with Meg's character trying to start a campaign to save her local bookstore from the "evil" giant bookstore. Coincidently, both Tom and Meg went to the same favourite coffee shop called......Starbucks.

I really wanted to tell Meg, when your shop loses customers, it's because your shop s*cks and they prefer going to the other bookshop, not because the other bookshop is pointing guns at their heads!!!

Since when in a 24 hour period during 365 days of the year does the Wal-Mart in your city close long enough for this?

Po-dunk towns maybe, but even those have supercenters now.

Sounds like something Homer Simpson would do.

"Corporate coffee hmm? I'll keep those rich bastards out" *Homer pulls a bottle of glue out of his pocket and tries to glue the door shut*
