How often do you seriously wonder if some kind of terrible, world shattering event is going to go down within your lifetime? (Note, doesn't have to be exactly an "event" but at least heading down that path. examples: The United States collapsing, complete fuel shortage, revolting robotic intelligence, mass riots, meteors (not as long as we have Bruce Willis), the destruction of any long standing institution (education, museums, roads, basic services), losing your freedoms, or just a generally giving up on the human race as a whole... Basically any number of things that are outside of your direct control. I probably have that feeling once a week, because of various things that may happen or I read about...usually out of my mind within an hour though.
I have a fear of waking up one morning to find out that zombies are running wild and I find out a bit too late and now I am completely unprepared!
I think about it fairly often. This isn't something I'm worried about in my lifetime, necessarily, but I was just watching a show (I think 60 Minutes) last night and they were discussing global warming. They said certain areas of the planet are raising an average of 1 degree per decade. Doesn't seem like much, but that means in just 500 years (merely an instant in the grand scheme of things) we could see temperatures of 150 degrees in some parts of the globe. Even a place that is usually cold, like Canada, could be 90-120 degrees year round. In 1,000 years, the planet could be completely uninhabitable (200+ degrees in most places). That short period of time is nowhere near long enough to adapt to the changes, which basically means we better get to another planet or figure out some way to reverse the process of global warming. Fairly alarming stuff.
If I recall there are objects in space (asteroids, comets, etc.) that could make impact with Earth in 2012, 2029, and 2036.
i kinda want something catastrophic to happen, something that'll change the face of the earth....... something like...... The Time Machine, the guy goes back in time to live a primitive life. amazing stuff ok back to reality, i wanna see aliens someday.
Nostradamus predicted Apocalypse in 2012. With all the blood shed, corruption, and greed going on in the world, I think it is right around the corner. Besides, Aliens are now in Texas!
I think like this sometimes too. It would be very interesting to have something crazy happen world-wide, but not necessarily something that killed a ton of people. Maybe that's asking too much though.
I gave up on the human race a long time ago. Is something catastrophic/apocalyptic going to happen in my lifetime? Definitely. Do I worry about it? Not yet.
I think the two most likely are nuclear terrorism, probably a dirtybomb that kills 100,000+ or a viral pandemic on the order of 1,000,000+ worldwide. The next most likely is probably a small scale nuclear exchange that might eventually effect 10,000,000 world wide. Statistically, you're probably OK.
Pollution and over-consumption. It's not some minor tree-huggin' hippie issue anymore. The planet is seriously over-burdened.
I often wonder about the year 2012 and the world-ending predictions of Nostradamus coinciding with the same year of the Mayan calendar. I think there are other cultures/traditions that also predict doom around this time. I wouldn't go as far as to call myself paranoid, but I'm certainly a bit more than mildly curious. I also often wonder what it would be like to be one of the survivors of some population-consuming apocalypse like we see in movies like Resident Evil, Mad Max, 28 Days Later, or The Day After Tomorrow.
One thing I'm pretty sure of is the future doesn't happen till it happens. There is no way to actually see into it. You can make assumptions about human nature and projections of likely scenarios but no human being has ever perceived future events. You could make some argument about parallel universes or some such scenario but human beings just don't have a mechanism to perceive anything outside of the Earthly perspective except mathematical models and imagination.
I feel within 200 years we will be advanced enough to colonize on Mars. I saw a documentary and it bought up ways to make Mars seem like Earth, like intentional green house gases that will add clouds and rain, and the gradual growing of plantlife.
