May be short-sighted due to ecological impact. There are other ways to keep the population down like bat colonies and chickens in every yard.

I was talking about this with my wife yesterday. It's surprising that it's being released in mainland USA, we don't exactly have the problems that Central America and the Caribbean have (on scale), I'm guessing this is to be preventative with the expectations of viruses traveling further north with climate change.

Why is this worse than spraying chemicals?

This is actually a good thing. Mosquitos exist globally even in Antarctica and are vital to certain regions ecosystems. These GMO mosquitos merely kill the ones that are harmful to humans while preserving the rest of mosquitos in the animal kingdom.

I haven't had time to read this on the research side, but if it works well enough and doesn't breed out wouldn't the species end in regions where it's needed for wildlife to survive on? - Like preventing female offspring over time means no mates to continue species in that region, so what do the animals do that eat these mosquitoes for their food source when it's gone?

Don't get me wrong and I do agree they're invasive in certain places but there's a lot of the ecosystem that needs the things we find as pests to survive. I almost think a better approach would be to go with a more difficult approach and have the females not be able to spread parasites/viruses. Hell at this level of genetic engineering you might as well have them eat nectar or be attracted to different food like the males, I'm not a mosquito expert but there has to be other approaches to this without possibly hurting other ecosystems.

I'm also not against GMOs and have a science background, so just curious was all.

I think it comes down to how fast any competing species can fill the gap. Then, does that competing species bring it's own issues?

Plot Twist: These GMO mosquito will end up mutating and will be able to carry and transmit corona-virus if they arent available to already.
