[from NBC's web page] Tonight, the new house band, U2! Yes, U2! For a full hour! How can you NOT watch?

U2 takes over Conan O’Brien’s show
Thursday will feature an entire evening dedicated to the band

NEW YORK - In his 12 years in charge of booking musical guests on Conan O’Brien’s “Late Night,” Jim Pitt always listed U2 and Johnny Cash as the dream artists he’d tried but never succeeded in getting.

He lost his chance with the late Cash, but the U2 dream is coming true Thursday in a major way.

O’Brien will turn over his entire show to the band, which is in New York for seven sold-out engagements at Madison Square Garden.

“We were able to offer them something to feel enough like an event for them to do the show,” Pitt said. “It’s basically ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien,’ the U2 edition.”

The NBC show has never before devoted itself entirely to a musical guest, although it gave major time a few years back to a holiday appearance by bandleader Max Weinberg’s other employer, Bruce Springsteen.

O’Brien’s a big U2 fan, and made a personal connection by talking at length with Bono during breaks in rehearsals for the band’s “Saturday Night Live” appearance last season, Pitt said.

It may be a nervous time for Bono, who is nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in trying to ease Third World poverty. People who watch the Nobel closely list the lead singer as one of the favorites. The winner is expected to be named Friday.

The band is expected to perform three songs and be interviewed by O’Brien.

Pitt is not pushing for any material in particular.

“When U2 decides they want to come on the show for an hour, you don’t get too picky about what they play,” he said.

It's kind of snobby of them to only come on if they get a big deal like the whole show being devoted to them, but whatever, I wish I had tivo so I could record this one.

Pretty cool, I always enjoy a good "in the year 2000" bit. I was dissappointed that they cut the broadcast before they finished the last song. Just like when they were on SNL, except this time it cut in the middle of the song and on SNL they were starting a 4th song.

So, is anybody going to the show here in Houston. I still can't afford a ticket :(

i fell asleep during the year 2000 bit - last thing i remember was the edge getting a tattoo that said eurkel on his forehead and bono reading the name eurkel like "who the hell is eurkel?"

guess they dont get family matters in ireland?

did they play any 80's songs?

when they were on snl and busted into i will follow i thought it was the greatest thing ever (for me to poop on).

Aw man I missed it. I don't like Conan, but I would have watched just for U2.

I thought it was the worst Conan ever. It seemed like every joke was U2 related which got old half way through the year 2000 bit. Did they really need to be on for the whole show?

Hmm...for a second I thought you were talking about a Conan ticket. I'm just neutral on U2, so won't be going.

    U2...meh, don't care either way.

Conan on the other hand is the pride of Ireland.

I liked Jessica Biel better tonight, not the actual interview as she was kinda boring and stale, but when she walked out in that tight black dress and those CFM pumps

U2...they're ok...I just found out funny that Conan had to reiterate over and over that U2 has stayed "vital", basically stroking U2's ego as that is the worst nightmare for Bono, when no one listens to their music anymore and regards them as old farts.

the music and the first interview were nice, with the edge/bono closing song sensational, but really the whole hour comes down to a bloody brilliant interview between Conan and Bono on his One/debt work, great exposure for a great cause......
