Fire Allegedly Set to Get Guests to Leave

Mon May 30, 9:27 AM ET

GENEVA, Ill. - A 46-year-old man allegedly set his own home on fire in order to get two visitors to leave, police said.

Dean Craig was charged with felony arson after allegedly splashing rubbing alcohol on the floor of the two-story home in Aurora Township and using a lighter to ignite the fire around 1 a.m. Sunday, the Kane County Sheriff's office said.

When authorities arrived at Craig's home, which is owned by his mother, it was engulfed in flames, police said. Craig and his two guests were not injured.

Craig allegedly had asked two visitors to leave, but when they refused, he threatened to light his house on fire, police said.

Craig was being held Monday at the Kane County Jail on $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 9.

A bit extreme, but a real issue!

Wifey and I invite people over and do everything possible to let them know what time the "party" is going to end, but they always seem to stay too long.

It's so hard because it's primarily my in-laws. If I tell them to leave then I'm the bad guy, if my wife says leave then they assume that I put her up to it.

It probably won't do any good (in-laws!!), but you might try having your wife tell them in advance that you have to hit the sack by (fill in the blank), so don't be surprised when we tell you the "party" is over. Be nice, but firm. And if they assume that you "put your wife up to it," so what? It's your house, and if they don't believe their kid (your wife), then tough t*tties. (t*tties being why you want to hit the sack... right, AB? ;) )

I wonder just how much time we squander worrying about the feelings of people that are being clueless and/or just damned rude. I know I've wasted plenty. There's a limit to just how much we should worry about stupid stuff like this!

    Don't be so entertaining. :)

We had the same problem back in college. We kept a tape of folk music (the kinda stuff you hear on NPR-like stations on Sunday mornings) handy, and come 3 or 4 am... bam... 'LafayETTE...LafayETTE...'.

We never had to play the second song.

i guess this is a good place to ask, but would it be considered felony arson if you burned your own house down? i know this was his mom's house, but say it was his? would it be arson just for the general danger it would cause? and i'm not talking for insurance fraud reasons either. just for kicks. not that i own a house or plan on burning a future one down, but i just wanna know.

So much easier to turn off the lights in the room the guests are in, or better yet. Turn off the power in that room.

Good idea. One time we had some friends riding in our car who had been ignoring us all day (except, of course, to get a ride from us). They got to listen to about 3 hours of disco. :D

Ummm... I don't know. What if that just makes them twice as annoying? :)

It might still be against the law because you are putting your neighbor's house in jeopardy as well.

I find that walking around naked with a towel over your shoulder usually works pretty well...

    Funny, but true.

Tis has happened at our house a few times. There is always one resident drunk. The bad thing is you don't want them to drive, so offered them a bed for the night or call a cab.

The parties generally end after 12 and most of the time at least half the people are gone by then.

I hate it when people overstay their welcome. I like having friends over and entertaining for the evening, but when I'm ready to go to bed I'm ready for everyone to get out of the house. Sometimes I get the feeling the people intentionally stay longer just to piss me off.

Go to bed, and let your wife continue entertaining her family without you. Once you've gone to bed, they'll probably leave soon after anyway. I probably wouldn't do it with acquaintances or business contacts, but good friends and family have to put up with that sort of stuff.
