Rather than getting emotional about today's deals, look at the trades in this manner:

Morey basically swapped Brooks and Battier 23 games early for two first round picks in this year's draft.. The fact that Morey was willing to deal Brooks and Battier proves what we already thought (we were going to let them walk at the end of the season). So Morey pulled a Utah/Denver move, rather than a Toronto/Cleveland move and in return we presently have 3 first round picks in this year's draft.

Dragic and Thabeet are simply fillers...

Brooks and Battier for two first rounders sound good to me!!!

Two picks at the ass end of the first round of a weak draft before a lockout isn't exactly the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If that's all we could get for last year's MIP and a solid veteran swingman, so be it. Fact is, though, that it basically amounts to jack ****, which we had already.

It has been reported that the Memphis pick is 2013 earliest.

I agree with this to an extent, but neither player is on the level of the superstars of the teams you just named. Denver knew Melo was a goner and traded him to get something out of it. I think it was fairly obvious that the same was the case with Deron Williams, but he was traded even earlier, because you might as well get more for someone while his value is at a peak rather than wait till next years trade deadline when it's diminished. Cleveland and Toronto were holding out hope that their stars would stay (and rightfully so).

So I see what you're saying, but there really is no comparison other than the fact that these guys were expiring and likely to get decent offers elsewhere.

Until Morey packages those picks to get someone worthwhile. Deron Williams went to the knyts for H.Harris and a bunch of picks. Same deal as usual. Stock assets.

Who said bad? I just said weak, which is just a guess based on the lack of hype. It could turn out to be the greatest draft in NBA history, but odds are we won't be plucking any all-stars from it. Of course, the (lotto-protected) Memphis pick is apparently in 2013, and who knows how that will turn out. But the odds are against us.

I'd love to beat those odds, mind you, or see Morey package all our draft picks into a trade for a star. I'm definitely rooting for him and all of the Rockets. But ****'s looking grim to me, homey. This is just another day in a long, uncertain process, and I'm not bursting with optimism right this sec.

(By the way, who's coaching the team next year?)

Exactly. Lack of hype is just lack of hype. It could turn out to be the greatest draft ever, it could turn out to be the worst. As a rebuilding team you still have to play the draft and hope you get lucky.

Could be a very weak draft, as a friend of mine who is a scout tells me, because of the lockout and unknowns of the CBA. Many top players MAY wait till 2012 to come out. Leaving mostly seniors and others who'll come out early to gain position in an otherwise weak draft. Looks like the 2012 draft could be the deepest in years, if all of this plays out.

I don't disagree, but the odds of getting lucky aren't great as I see them. And the Rockets' luck has been awful for three years running.

I understand players may skip coming into the NBA and all that. But still you have to play the draft ahead of you, not the one after.

That's similar to playing the Cavs-Heat in a back2back. So you rest some guys playing the Cavs so you can save them for the Heat...only to lose to the Cavs because you looked past them and then lose to the Heat because they are much better.

The Rockets should still be doing all they can to win on draft day this year.

You really think these are great deals? Then you aint seen nothin, I got a 3 legged dog, a house with no roof, and a car with no motor to sell you real cheap. Better hurry before Morey beats you to the punch.

And I'm sure they will. Morey has done well with late first rounders. It's just that without any all-stars on the roster, it's small comfort. The Rockets still have so far to go.
