I am intrigued with all this talk about Tim Duncan and what not, but be realistic. We have a very small chance at getting him--this year. As far as I can understand the Rockets will more than likely have 3 draft picks and a 4.5 million dollar trade exemption. Now everyone here thinks that Tim would gladly move to Houston and the Spurs would come out of heaven and take the worst deal ever created for a future hall of famer. I just don't picture it happening. The Spurs could get Chris Webber straight up with change extra, does Walt Williams and Cato seem more appealing?? no the only thing the Rockets can hope for is that he signs a one year deal and then they can make a serious run at him with the trade exemption and the free-ed up cap room with Hakeem's absence. But I could be wrong, Hakeem might retire with Charles and the Rockets might have other things go on soon. I just think focus should be more on the draft and free agency (in the realist sense). --Rocketman ------------------
good deal for the spurs: spurs get: walt williams kelvin cato bryce drew cuttino mobley draft pick (1) rockets get: tim duncan antonio daniels ------------------ johnny "red" kerr:i'm glad the bulls did'nt draft steve francis. dan roan: why!!!!! johnny red kerr:because he would forever be compared to michael jordan.
That's still a crappy deal for the Spurs. They lose the 2nd best player in the league for a bunch of role players and one above average scoring guard. ------------------
I'm not saying that the Rockets have any more than a slight chance of getting Duncan, but you guys are missing the point. The Spurs are not exactly in the position of power here - they may not like what they are getting in return, but ultimately it is going to be up to Duncan where he goes. If Duncan is happy in San Antonio then they will pay him the money and the story is over. If he is unhappy and states unequivocally that he will not return, then there are two possible scenarios 1) Duncan merely becomes a free agent and takes his pick of offers from a team that has money (under the salary cap) to pay him (The Rockets not being amongst those teams) 2) Duncan says he will do a sign and trade, which a) Gives the Spurs something in return and b) Opens up the number of teams that he can now play for (Because in a trade you don't have to be under the cap, just swap equal salaries) I personally think that if Duncan is unhappy in San Antonio then option 2 is the most likely. This at least gives us a fighting chance of obtaining his services. Under this scenario, the Spurs may not be getting a fair deal in return, but getting Cato, Williams, Drew etc may be the best of a bad bunch of deals. If they refuse, Duncan can always say "Too bad" and just resort to pure free agency and sign with Orlando or Chicago. Bear in mind that a "Sign and trade" is considered a single action - that is, the Spurs cannot sign him and then refuse to trade him. ------------------ http://rocketdavo.tripod.com
How ABout All three Picks [ or Drew and 2 picks] Cato and Walt For Duncan Now the Spurs get a lot out of it. You gotta pay to play. [If we could save one Pick to get Martin . . It would be love. . but . .] Spurs gets a line up that Is very Tall. [Walt behind Elliot] [Drew behind Johnson.] Rocket River ------------------
