    Pensacola, Florida:

Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy will be released from prison on June 17, 2009. Donaghy, convicted for betting on professional basketball is serving a 15-month sentence at the federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida.
Donaghy’s release date has recently been in question due to concerns about his medical condition. Donaghy was injured during an assault in November of 2008. During the assault, another inmate claiming ties to the New York mob beat Donaghy with a heavy object. Donaghy suffered severe knee and leg injuries that will require surgery.
Donaghy will complete his prison term at a halfway house in Tampa Florida. His future plans include re-uniting with his four daughters, obtaining employment, participating in treatment for his addiction to gambling, and finishing a memoir of his 13 years in the NBA.

he has a gambling addiction. he fixed games for his own benefit. however, he doesn't deserve this.

when approached by the mob, saying you won't fix games for them isn't the answer they are going to accept. he was forced into it and was given a small % of the winnings so that he would be as guilty as the muscle pushing him. he was used as a pawn, or a sacrificial lamb. put in jail, wife leaves him, children won't speak to him, and now before his release he's beaten to the point of needing surgery. my guess is that had something to do with his memoir.

on an NBA fan BBS this isn't going to be a popular opinion, but i really feel bad for the guy.

I doubt the mob just goes to referees and TELLS them that they are going to fix games. My guess would be (and obviously I don't know this as fact) that he got into some pretty heavy gambling debt and agreed to help outcomes as a way to get out of debt.

I mean, is the fact that the only ref we know of being compromised happens to be the guy with a serious gambling problem just a coincidence?

EDIT: and he probably didn't deserve the beating he received, but when you work with the mob...

Either way the prison should be held responsible for him getting injured.

Nobody deserves an cruel punishment, it says so in our rights, so for those of you saying that he did deserve it or should have gotten beaten, I suggest you think about it that way.

I'm not saying he deserves it. I'm saying he is doing time, where this type of activity is quite common, for the dumbest of reasons. And I'm not saying some perv who rapes little kids deserves to get ran through once his inmates find out...but I don't exactly feel sorry for that person either.

alot of people are going to say he doesnt deserve this, but you know the millions of NBA fans deserved the game to be officiated correctly, and we shouldnt of all had to suffer because of his gambling problems. You get what you deserve.

He went to the mob because he had huge gambling debts. He did deserve prison time for that but not a physical beating.

And the sopranos ran out of writing material?

I doubt the guy that assaulted him had connections to the mob. I've seen enough joe pesci films to know that you get more than broken knees for snitching. It was probably one of stern's men sending him a message.

This wasn't a cruel punishment, since it is not a punishment at all. A crime was committed against him, for which I'm sure the perpetrator will suffer some punishment. It's not a question of deserving or not. He was simply victimized by a crime.

It sounds ike he had some serious injuries. I hope it doesn't handicap him.

It wasn't a punishment per se... but it was a "punishment" in the sense of something like karma... and I don't think he deserved that... but I brought up cruel and unusual punishment as an indirect example... it's kinda hard to explain what I'm trying to say... I agree what you said about the crime part though.
