I worked a double today, and when my wife got home, she told me my dog was acting funny. He was shaking, walking funny, and wouldn't jump. She naturally feared the worst, and worried all night.

I just got home from work, and after doing some research and watching him, I think it's his anal glands. It all makes sense.

We used to think he was just weird, because he was spinning circles in the yard like crazy every time he had to poop. Now, I think maybe it's strain from this problem.

We always thought it was funny when he always wanted his butt rubbed constantly.

Now, he won't sit, and he's shaking a little constantly. He will wag his tail and eat normally, but he hasn't pooped in like a day-ish. When I go to lift his tail, he tucks it. He doesn't seem to be sensitive anywhere else.

Anyone ever have anything like this?

He's a shi-tzu poodle mix. Poor guy. I feel like we failed him.

I'm gonna try and dig up my favorite picture, and post it here.

You should take him to a vet. Checking out this sort of thing and treating it, whatever the cause is, is what they do.

You need to 'juice' his anal gland. It's a problem in small dogs, where they cant do it themselves when they crap.

I've seen it done. It's gross and smells bad. lemme see if I can find a link...

When I watched my friend do it, the stuff sprayed a solid 4 feet... So I would suggest doing it outside and point it away from you (smells like dead fish).

My friend didn't quite do it like the lady in the video. She just kinda squeezed around the area, not really getting her fingers all up in the dogs hole.

Vets can do it for you too.

The petco in beaumont does it for us when we bring our dog in for grooming. I'd check with them and see if they will do it.

You have to squeeze a dog's anal glands to clean them out - relieve the pressure - and prevent infection.

PetSmart includes it with grooming if you'd like. It will cost you around $50. He doesn't need to see a vet. If that doesn't help, then see a vet. They will tell you if that doesn't work or they can't do it.

Was just talking to my wife about getting a small dog and then I read this.

    Thanks now I am hungry.

I had a dog before and went on vacation. My friend said he would look after and the dog died while I was gone.. on his watch. There I was sitting at the beach crying. Having dogs is fun but I am a baby when it comes to the sadness of medical and death. Yes I know it's 'just a dog'. I left my dog seeing her all nice and spirited then came back and she was ashes in a box. You can't not have a dog because of the sadness and attachment you know you will have and feel when the dog dies.. but still doesnt make it less sad.

Have a pomeranian-poodle mix and have to take the little guy once a month to petco to have his anal glands expressed. $20 and takes five min. No appt needed.

Don't do it yourself. You can seriously hurt him since you don't know what you are doing.

Take the dog to get expressed. Cheap and fast.

If it gets infected, it either dies or costs a lot of $$$ to get fixed.
