My girlfriend adopted another adult long haired dachshund and brought him home a couple weeks ago. The last few days she has noticed worms in his stool. She describes them as rice like is appearance. I have done some Google searches but have not found a parasite listed with this description. I did find that some worms are transmittable to humans and that worries me with a 1 year old in the house. Does this description sound familiar to anybody? Is there anyway to lessen transmission risk to the humans living in the house besides washing hands regularly? We have meds from the vet for the dog so hopefully he'll be ok but I still want to avoid people getting infected. TIA
1. Take him to the vet 2. Dogs and humans don't share many parasites - but you know who could have told you this? The vet! 3. Take him to the vet
I would call the vet you took your pet to and ask the vet clinic about your concerns. They could answer better than anyone here could. That said unless your 1 year old is eating dog feces he should be okay. Scoop the poop when the dog goes outside and put it somewhere the dog can't get to it. Most worms are transmitted from eating feces so your dog probably got it from eating another dog's poop or even its own. Keep a clean environment and your pet and your family should be okay.
this - its really not a big deal - the vet will give you a pill or two to kill them little rice-lookin worms then get him on the monthly heartworm pills and you wont have a problem.
Most likely tapeworms. My dogs all had them last spring. But when I took them to the vet they never found anything when they took a stool sample. So one day I literally took a piece of **** to them to examine (with squirming worms in it).
you're infected already <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9fmx24FbZoM?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9fmx24FbZoM?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
don't panic. They're just hook worms. buy some de-wormer and make sure the dog poops outside for a couple of days. Unless you eat them I doubt anything would happen.
poop outside for a couple days? are you saying that when your dog does not have hookworms he is allowed to poop in the house?
For worms, you need to give your dog Ivermectin. Normally this is a monthly chew preventative tablet.
