Dog Wiggles Paw Free to Shoot Florida Man

Thu Sep 9, 8:07 AM ET

PENSACOLA, Fla. - A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies — one in his arms and another in his left hand — when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff's report said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

The puppy that pulled the trigger is famous now, somebody is gonna come looking for that one. What a story. What's your dog's name? Gunfighter. Why Gunfighter? Because he/she shot a man.

Speaking of cute and deadly animals, over here at A&M, yesterday was some kind of drive for organ donation. Anways, in one building over here, the Blocker building, they had a Tiger Cub out to attract attention to get people to sign up. Damn, what a cute little guy this cub was. He let out a little tiger roar, "meowrrrr." He was the size of a medium dog I guess, but he still seemed like a little baby (probably because he was a baby).

Not after that. Whenever those stories hit the wire, the shelters always receive hundreds of offers of adoption.

That story reminds me of the one's that crop up from time to time of hunters gored to death by deer they were hunting.

Or those Americans Funniest Home Video type of videos of some fat redneck hunter getting attacked by a deer he is trying to shoot. Sweet justice.

I just wish the dog had better aim...

I think it's BS to charge the guy with animal cruelty unless he was doing it for sport or some other twisted motive, civilization has gone soft, which is why the aliens will kick our asses when they get here. Everyone needs to go rewatch Ole Yeller to learn about the sacrifices we must often make. Fact is, he turns these dogs in to the pound and they are killed there so what is the difference?

I'm with SSG. It doesn't sound like cruelty; it sounds like the most painless death he could afford them. Can only the State kill puppies? It's ironic that the last 4 puppies probably will find homes but only because the others died and this guy was wounded.

What if the guy bred cobras? What if he was destroying 7 baby cobras and one of them bit him putting him in the hospital? Charges then, I think not.

One is humane and one is not, besides if he would have taken them to his local SPCA they would have had a chance to be adopted. In your estimation is shooting the brains out of a puppy a painless act?

Who is to say which is more painless, don't get many post incident interviews do we? Although a bit messier a bullet to the brain for the shootee seems about as quick and painless as it can get.

    You scare me ;)

I guess we`ll have to disagree on this, but if it were up to me and a dog/cat had to be put down, I would prefer them slipping into a deep sleep and not having there brains splattered all over the front yard.

Obviously, he'll be charged because we can't really tolerate a fuzzy line between what puppy killings are allowed and which ones aren't. But, I don't think he's a bad person (or any worse) for shooting them. It is equal in cruelty to a licensed shelter euthanizing them.
