I know Yao is good player now, but we all know he has so much more to learn and so much more to do to improve.

1.) He needs to bulk up
2.) He needs to go to a big man camp
    3.) He needs to rest
4.) He needs to go to pre-season camp with the ROX
5.) Feel free to add more....

    BUT!

Will Yao really have the opportunity to do any of that? Or is he just going straight back to China after the season and he won't be able to work with American strength trainers or attend any Big Man Camps?

    Does anyone know his schedule?

I think he will have a some time. 5-10 pounds is reasonable.

But what I find mind-boggling is that the Rox have not given him a personal dietician. I read alot of articles that say he eats cheese pizzas with mushroom and kentucky friend chicken etc. That definitely isnt a diet of champions.

    Whats up with that???

The first thing he needs is a good month of rest at home in Shanghai, imo.

After that, well, so far, the CBA officials and the Sharks have lived up to everything they originally said they'd do, and NBA and Oriental TV (Shanghai TV) is scoring bigtime on broadcasting arrangements.

I feel confident that even if Yao goes home (and he probably wants to, surely), that the NBA will follow him with trainers and coaches (if not camps), because that is yet another request the Sharks and CBA had. They were totally interested in the NBA training their players.

Further, for rookie camp, I wouldn't be surprised to see us bring some of the Sharks players over for those two weeks to pay homage to their wishes that the Rockets train their players...you can invite anyone.

so part of the Rox agreement with the Sharks is to provide American training to the Sharks?

That's cool! Maybe they'll discover another weapon over there. I just hope Yao has time to improve of the break.

No, not part of the agreement, but it was an initial request. It can't be an agreement with the Rox, because you can't put that in writing and it isn't really allowed. For instance, Kiki Vandeweghe has be instructed to not run his camp anymore, right? But, independent trainers could certainly do that (like Neuman), and I suspect (with no real certainty) that the NBA is arranging to either go over to China with camps or to invite their players here. The Rockets are definitely in talks to have exhibition games in China.

I thought that's what the Rox were telling Yao to eat, because they wanted him to increase his calorie intake and those were foods that he could tolerate to eat.

Yeah but you dont want the guy to eat food that is greasy, high in fat, with little to no nutritional value. Afterall, this is an NBA team and I would have expected the following:

    1. Grilled Fish
    2. Chicken Breast
    3. Protein Shakes
    4. Pasta
    5. Steaks

But Kentucky Fried Chicken??? Thats what BBS'ers eat. Not professional athletes

Yeah, I heard the Rockets wanted him to eat more high calorie food like pizza. Apparently, his normal diet consisted of soups and other Chinese dishes that were naturally low in calories and wouldn't help him bulk up. Maybe he should stop eating that "real" Chinese food and have some Panda Express. That stuff may not be authentic, but it'll definitely make you gain weight in record time. Mmmm, orange chicken...

This is actually good IMO, because even though these food are junk food, i am glad he is taking them (many chinese people hates pizza, cheese, etc), since they will really help him bulk it up.

What I would like to know is will the Rockets be sending their own personal trainer for Yao when he is at home in China, and perhaps most importantly, when he is training and playing with the Chinese National Team?? (and how I wish he could just spend the summer sleeping, resting, sleeping (he really seems to like his sleep;)), training with the Rockets at Westside, sleeping... you get the picture)

Will the Rockets do that? Will they be ALLOWED to if they desire?

during the all-star game, they showed the bed that yao used to sleep on. that bed is long but narrow. since he's the all-star now, should the rockets make him a custom bed and ship it to china?

'Bulk' is 'NOT' what is needed!!!!!
Strength and Stamina are what Yao Ming needs. Only a small increase in weight will be acceptable as his body type will never tolerate the upper half being big, if that is what is in your mind. Unlike previous big men, he is big below the waist and thin on the upper. This is a great advantage over the others in respect to prevention of leg and knee injuries. Yao Ming should spend the maxiomum time possible with Moses Malone, because learning to position himself for shooting and rebounds will be the most important development of his career.

i misspoke. yetti, you are absolutely right. yao does need to work on his strength and stamina and learn to position himself for rebounds. yao, will you please box out your man????

please don't be shaq and cwebb. those guys have not learned to box out their men even though they have been in the league for a long time.

I agreed, what Yao needs is improvement in stamina. If he has SHaq's or Francis' stamina, he's going to be hard to beat. Bulking up and eating right can improve stamina and that's what I hope he will do from now on or the summer.

First, most basketball experts will tell you that it requires 2 to 3 years of consistent training to reach what would be considered peak athletic fitness. He won't be able to do it in one summer. His body needs time to build muscles in the right places. It's like wearing callouses on your fingers when you are playing a guitar. There are different levels - practice at home, playing with a band, playing gigs regularly, playing gigs every night. Each level increases the build up. Yao needs a couple years of pounding in the league for his body to fully adapt to the game.

Second, the Rockets have ALL of their players on recommended dietary plans. Most of the players actually have nutritionists and some (like Steve) have chef's who prepare all their meals. The Rockets are very likely lording over everything Yao eats.
