The NY Knicks of the mid 90's, under Pat Riley (with JVG as assist. coach), were a tought defensive team with a top 5 center, and were consistently in the championship hunt. When Riley left, the Knicks decided to go to a more offensive style and hired Don Nelson (sound familiar?). Nelson emphasized offense and even wanted to set Ewing for jump shots at the top of the key instead of down in the post, to free up the driving lanes (sound familiar again?). Nelson and the Knicks struggled with the style change and there were alot of rumblings behind the scene that the players were not happy with the new system that emphesized offence. Nelson was fired mid-season by the Knicks and never finished coaching his one season with the Knicks. The Knicks were 9 games over .500 (34-25) in the 95-96 season at the time Nelson was fired. Van Gundy was then made head coach and brought them back to the tough rugged defensive style they really excelled in and returned as championship contenders, even making the finals under JVG.

The only way JVG is going to walk through that door at Toyota Center is if he's doing an ESPN broadcast. He will not be back as the head coach of the Houston Rockets that bridge is still burning. Jeff never got out of the first round with the Rockets but he did take a group headed for the lottery to a 50+ win season so maybe he was a better coach than I gave him credit for.

I'm not sure if the passage is meant to emphasize that JVG is the answer to our prayers.

I do think it's bringing up the point that DEFENSE WINS GAMES.

No JVG is not coming back. But we can get Rick Carlisle if we follow the Knicks lead. Plus if we ever did this, I am not in favor of an old recycled coach. Do what Shaq said and get some younger blood in here. Someone who can relate to the players better and has a decent coaching track record. Why we gotta keep recyling the same old coaches over and over again.

So the conclusion is all JVG's faults for the rockets' recent struggles? :D

Rick Carlisle, Tom Thibodeau, the thread's intent sure points in that direction.

That said, I don't think this is the time to fire Adelman. It's evident that the players are having a hard time adjusting to his system but what kind of image of the Rockets will this bring to future potential coaching prospects. What coach would want to take on a team that would fire their coach after a quarter of a season? Granted, if the Rockets started the year 2-17 or something miserable like that, a firing would be justified, but a 12-12 record is not as bad as it looks. Sure, it doesn't reach our expectations but it isn't that big a hole for the team to climb out of. I'd give him this season, and if the team fails to make the playoffs or flames out again, a change might be in order.

I heard warrior commentator saying Nelson was fired because he wanted to trade Ewing for Shaq, and the words got back to Ewing.

Yeah, it is an image of Rockets. This is the effects of left over from a disciplinarian defensive coach. This team probably will not adapt to any style except grinding out game play with defensive style and hard playing.
The question is, is it possible to hire a defensive based assistant coach to
become a disciplinarian and the enforcer (champion) of the team if Adelman is to retain as head coach. Sacking Adelman mid-season will turn Rockets to a lottery team this year. Anyone knows any defensive minded assistant coach??

I wouldn't give him one full season. If we still struggle lik we are now by all star break, i say do the change then, we can still have playoff success with a new coach and 1.5 month to prepare.

If Adelman does not figure it out by the end of the year, I will be all over wanting Tom Thibodeau.

he's with Boston now. So Rockets can only bring him back next season at best situation.

Thibodeau will not come here as an assistant coach. That guy is good enough to be a head coach in the league. The Boston job is a stepping stone.

firing coaches on first or even second year dos not happen in Houston, as a matter of fact they get extensions to be given reassurance that the job is not in jeopardy, that is what happened to JVG after the second year.

I like this point. If the team is drastically under-performing, the organization need not wait until the end of the year to make a coaching change. I do not think its drastic yet, but if it comes to a point where we are consistently hovering below a .500 winning percentage all the way past the all star break, I would not be against removing Rick. It is still a little early to be talking about this though.

I think everyone is implying to bring him in as a head-coach. I think he would be my next choice.

I wouldn't be able to withstand listening to him do interviews after the game. That guy's voice pisses me off!

we should go for Thibodeau, I always thought he played a huge part.. His summer league teams we're just about un-beatable and just look what he has done with Bostons Defense.. I think it's time to try him at the next level
