Have anyone ever wonder if there is anything beyond the universe? Is it all there is out there? Does it have a limit? Not too long ago we thought the earth was flat and you could fall off the earth if you take a long boat trip but now we know the truth. I've been reading about all these theories like the multiverse, bubble universe, extra demensions, etc etec but they're just theories and nothing more. We are probably so far off from the answer it's not even funny, this is one question that we'll probably never find the answer to.
Y'know Kong...that is a $500 trillion dollar question that I don't think anyone can answer as of right now. Even with limit, the Universe is probably so large that there may not be a beginning or end. Our knowledge of it is probably not even 1%...those things you mentioned like the multiverse and extra dimensions could just be another layer of this universe. Very hard to say or predict.
Time and Space, i.e. "limitations" is what we are hard wired to exist by. To fathom such a world without these is impossible for us, since we know of nothing else. Eternity, Infinity and a Bottomless Pit we cannot comprehend.
You should watch The Universe on the History Channel. It's the best tv series on the science channels. Last weeks episode was about the possibilities of parallel universes. They also briefly touched on this subject. Interestingly, they said that IF the universe is infinite, then there definetly is another earth that is a 100% direct copy of our earth. This is 100% true if the universe is infinite. But it does not really matter to us because we cannot ever reach that earth. Also if the universe is infinite, then out there, there is another earth with the exact same history and same exact population. So there is another you out in the universe. This is all due to the rule of infinity. Pretty scary.
From my recent course in upper level mathematics, I agree that if the Universe is infinite, then there infinite copies of our very existence out there as well, mathematically speaking. But the physicist in me says the entropy would have an infinite possible solutions so then there are infinite universes out there that are different. The are infinite infinities! In fact, some infinities are larger than other infinities...
Remember when you wrote that post about hurricane Katrina vs Hakeem in a playoff series. That was the funniest thing I think I have ever seen. Then you came back with a coment from a guy walking in the flooded streets of New Orleans. How can I go ack and find it?
Exactly! infinity * infinity = infinity I can't agree that some infinities are larger than other infinity. I will argue that infinity is the reciprocal of zero. And there is only one ZERO. Thus there is only one infinity.
More like... Power set is the set of all subsets of a given set. The Powerset always has 2^n more elements than the set it modifies. set of Natural Numbers < The Powerset of (set of natural numbers) = set of Real Numbers< Power Set of (set of Real Numbers) < Power Set of (set of Power Set of (set of Real Number)) < .... And yet, you would be hard pressed to say the set of Natural Numbers {1,2,3,4,...} is not infinitely large. And yet, there are sets that are larger.
I now know what you mean. It's like comparing an infinite list of possitive numbers and a list of all numbers. Both are infinite. But the list of all numbers (possitive and negative) will always be greater than the list of only possitive numbers. But back to the original topic. IMO, the mathematical possibility is the larger infinite than the physical infinity. Because mathematics is all theory or on paper, while physics is the science of ... well all things physical (not theoretical). Unless, all physical beings are actually nothingness, that is. In other words, if humans discover that quarks and electrons are not the principle particle of all things physical, then you could argue that matter and energy is then made of nothingness..... I hope I'm making sense.
I used to think there was no limit ... then the M#)$(*&$#)@(^#@*$&^@*(#$^#(*@!*&!*)!$#&^cking Toronto #)^#*&#^!&^%#$_(* Raptors happened.
I'd like to hear proof of this, because it sounds pretty bogus to me. Only a theory. Seems to me that if that were true, it would also be proof positive of an infinite number of these "Earth copies." It's impossible to prove that in the vastness of space, you don't just reach a point of zero matter, where there is just nothingness from there on out.
This tripped me out even if it isn't scientifically or mathematically true. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HvgwR9ERCBo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HvgwR9ERCBo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> If there were other alternate dimensions, it'd be cool to fold one like a piece of paper, roll it and light it up.
Will just think about it this way, if the Sun is a star and our galaxy has billions of stars alone, imagine the possibilities of extraterrestrial life.
I believe I've started a thread like this way back a long time ago. I used to wonder about this all the time. You could really ponder it for a long time. Moes hit the nail on the head, though.
