Does Rafer Alston's 6yr 29M contract set the benchmark for FA PGs?

Rafer Alson, 6yr 29M contract with the Raptors. Terrible! Just terrible! Very similar to the Kevin Ollie signing last year by the Cavs. What's the deal with giving marginal role players deals beyond 4 years?

My question is, how does this relate to the Rockets are THEIR pursuit of a PG in Free Agency?

If a backup PG like Alson can get 6/29 then what would a starter PG receive? I am sure guys like Hudson, Arroyo, Fisher and Barry are looking at that Alson deal and making sure they get more than he got.

So far in Free Agency, is there a single contract that has been worth it? GMs are throwing money at everyone!

    Wow, that's expensive.
He showed he can play this yr but before that, he almost could not get a job in the NBA.

This is the same organization (GM) that signed Eddie Jones and Brian Grant to max contracts.

Alston signed with the Raptors, not the Heat.

But anyway, yes, way too much money.

Wait a minute... This was the Raptors? Didn't they cut Alston a year or two ago?

    Is Alvin Williams done?

The FA market is going nuts this season.

If Camby is worth 60 millions in 6 years, Yao has to be worth at least 150 millions in 7 years.

Anyway, if Folye can grab 40 millions in 5 years, I cannot see why Shaq is expensive at 30 million a year.

This is why I hope the Rockets decide to sign a cheap temporary point guard for next season rather than making a huge commitment to sign a big name point guard. It’s too early to make a long term commitment. We need to see how Yao and Mcgrady play together before deciding exactly what we need from the point guard position and who to give a long term commitment to.

wow, these contracts are slightly ridiculous.

Rocks have enough of those, they need to stay away.

That's what I am getting at. I want Barry, but at what cost? In fact one could say that the cost for Fisher, Arroyo and Hudson will be high too. Any PG you get sans a Charlie Ward will probably come at a cost much higher than their real worth. Will we be comfortable with that? It will be interesting.

I heard on ESPN radio last night that the T-Wolves had offered Troy Hudson a 5 year deal worth 18 million. After this deal, I'd match that in a second.

And talk is that with incentives it would top at 25M. HOWEVER, from reports I have read Hudson said that they are getting "closer" but are not there yet!

I doubt Hudson (who is more proven) will ask for more than 5yr 18M (25M with incentives) if Alston gets 6yr 29M.

Does anyone know how much we are paying Lue now?

I know his agent said he was going to opt out for more money, but I think the Rockets might have already given him an extension to complete the trade, anyone know how much?

I'd personally rather have Hudson for 5/18M than Barry for 4/24. Doesn't hurt that Hudson is younger also.

I'd like to do better(Barry for three years would be optimum), but I would be satisfied with Hudson/Gaines/Lue at PG.

Teams will run out of m,oney before July runs out...good bargains might well remain.

Of course, I want a good player and a good cap price. Yesterday.

    Well I agree somewhat...

Teams this year have a bulk load of money to throw around and players that don't deserve those extra years are getting it. I'm happy for Rafer, for those of you that don't know about him...he's really good. The NBA is very political and he had to prove to GM's that the street ball legend will only appear on the And 1 tapes...not in the NBA. He's done that and prove that he can play this game at a high level. Now....like I said before, I agree with you somewhat. But honestly, I really believe the Rockets were willing to pay that kind of money anyway, just not that many years.

GM's have gone nuts this offseason. It is particularly surprising considering the fact that no one knows what the collective bargaining agreement will be after this season and the TV contract with the league is up in 3 seasons. What they hell are they thinking?

The Brent Barry offer looks like the biggest bargain in the world compared to deals like this!

I don't know what Barry is doing, but, as mentioned, I wouldn't mind throwing some money at Hudson if Barry doesn't bite. 5 years 20 million, or 4 years 22 million, something like that.

Rafer's agent really schooled the new Toronto GM.

Steve Nash: Phoenix, 5 yrs, $65 million
Mehmet Okur: Utah, 6 yrs - $48 million
Adonal Foyle: Golden State, 5 yrs - $41 million
Rafel Alston: Toronto, 5 yrs - $29 million

This is the sh*ttiest, most overpaid FA class I've ever seen.
