I'm curious about something. I was listening to sports radio the other day and a caller started going on about how bad a certain Astros player was last season when he was almost immediately corrected by the host who pulled numbers and basically proved the caller was inaccurate in his assessment. This seems to happen a lot. I'll admit there have been plenty of times I've honestly believed one thing only to have the stats tell me something else. This is particularly true historically as memory gets cloudy with time. For me, I find myself openly rooting for guys maybe more than I should or the opposite. The one guy that comes to mind for me is Amare Stoudemire. I have just never been a fan and I question how great he really is - especially because of his defensive deficiencies. But, I had a conversation with Clutch a few weeks ago where I found myself openly arguing about his skill and then realizing what I said was based purely on my feelings and not on the facts. I'll be honest. I kinda felt like an idiot. What I'm wondering is do you have any admitted biases that cloud your perception? We have openly debated on here about YOF's, but I'm curious if that extends to any other players on the Rockets or not, current players or guys who have retired. Is there a guy you want to believe is better than he is because you like him or a guy who you think stinks because you don't like him? I'm just curious if anyone will openly admit it.
Of course it does. I like a certain style of play and as such I tend to gravitate or like the players that play that way more than others that may be just as effective playing another style. I freely admit I am biased towards players that move off the ball, and make cuts etc. DD
For sure. If you find a certain player or their style of play annoying, you generally will not want to give them credit. The opposite can be said for your favorite player...kind of like being a "homer" but for players instead of teams
Just look at all the delusional posters in the GARM that actually think we'll finish as the two seed next season.
Seeing how YOFs hate AB, I decided to be a fan of AB. AB is an all star PG for me because he made his haters eating crow and hating him more.
Sure has. In the past & present: Camelo for his cheap shot and running away backwards after the fact, Boozer for how he left Cleveland and Fisher for his cheap foul on Scola two years ago. In the future: The 3 Idiot Amigos but especially Lebron. But I'll be the first to admit that I wouldn't cry if they were on our team...well maybe if we're thinking about Fisher. So yes, I'm bias towards my perception of them, but will acknowledge their talent.
I know it does for me. I think it goes back to your other thread I like players. I like their personality It is the reason Steve Francis is greater than TMac to me. Steve gave it his all . .. IMO . . TMac didn't I am a fan of the Chuckie Browns, Chuck Hayeses Dude who work hard, have a great attitude and outlook on the thing! I cannot view them as stats and assets. Rocket River
I have a huge ego relatively speaking. so sometimes I appreciate people like Ron but hate people like Kobe or Tmac when he was not a Rocket.
I like a player who will step up at the end of the game and make smart plays. I don't like players who act douchy. I don't like players who are arrogant, but confident. If you don't match those, I won't consider you a winner even if you have good stats. Tmac can score all he wants; at the end of the day, I'll still take Manu..
I think ego is rewarded too greatly in this league. That's why I like the guys on our team who display the least amount of ego, regardless of their stats.
It's pretty simple, really. If the guy has a good personality (hard worker, fun to be around, etc.) his talents are magnified and his deficiencies are played down. And if a guy has a bad personality (grumpy, pouting, fighting with teammates, etc.), his deficiencies on court are magnified and his talents are played down.
I've felt exactly the same way on Amare thinking he was overrated. Amare's stats do tell a different story though. I would lke to see some advanced stats relating to Amare, seeing if Nash has had a direct affect on inflating them. I know Amare's numbers, but for some reason I still don't think he's a superstar that can carry a team. Might just be me being ignorant. So Jeff, yes, Ive done this with a few players, Amare just happened to be one I've questioned the most as well.
I think we all do it to some degree. Some are just have more practice looking at things more objectively without putting their emotions in it. I try to look things both ways, and I usually try to put facts first and emotions second (its really tough sometimes). I hate Deron Williams and Jason Terry, but I respect their skills and if they played for us I would love them.
Steve Francis is one of the most under-appreciated and misunderstood heroes of our times. A statue of him and his jersey belongs beside Hakeem's. He built the Toyota Center btw.
