In the meantime, the placeholders kept the crowd engaged, coming from behind in the fourth quarter for one more compelling finish. The building roared for a Rodriguez 3-pointer and a big Bill Walker dunk.

D’Antoni was asked if he had any special message for his roster of temp workers before their next-to-last game.

“Not really,” he said. “Just, ‘See ya.’ ”

I watched the last part of the Wizards game. The Knicks have great fans. I dislike D'Antoni and despise their ownership but New Yorkers love NBA basketball and support their team in good and bad times.

    D'Antoni has one season.

If they don't win next season with ANY free agent additions he'll be packing his bags and coaching in Europe.

He may wear out his welcome in NY but I'm pretty sure a guy that averaged something like 58 wins per season over a four year stretch would be able to find another NBA job. He may run a gimmick system but tell that to Don Nelson who's done the same thing yet managed to coach in this league since before most of the posters on this board were even born.

I don't see that happening. That past couple of years don't even count, they were purposely stripping the team. D'antoni was doing them a favor even bothering.

Nothing but a gimmick coach like Donnie. Can't stand his style of play.

    he's just being honest.

those "temp workers" didn't play hard, they didnt win, and mostly they didnt listen to him because they were all thinking of their next contract.

"see ya" is the appropriate send off.

When you intentionally pile on a bunch of ending contract temp workers just so they can make room for their eventual replacements, of course they're not going to play hard if their only reason for existence is to be expendable for Lebron.

Not listening to the coach and not playing hard is an after-effect of that approach. "See ya" is still the appropriate send-off because did they really think they were going to build a cohesive unit?

"see ya" is never an appropriate send off when you're talking about being a well-run organization. If D'Antoni can't get his "temp players" to play hard and listen to him, that says a lot about his abilities as a coach.

I never had a problem with D'Antoni until he went to New York -- now I can't stand him. He comes off really smug for a coach whose had zero success outside of Steve Nash. I hope New York strikes out in FA and sucks again next year, leading to his firing.

    tmac, ron, von?

the best run organizations know when to cut ties with bad apples. most of the knicks half season rentals played only for themselves. why would they listen to the coach when there is zero chance that any of them will be back? they wanted to pad their stats and earn a contract somewhere else.

agreed, but only because the rockets would benefit. i dont care if he's fired or not, but he's always acted this way. i never really cared for him as a coach either, but in this case i think he's right. should he have given that quote to the media? no way.

This is the same jackass that said Jordan Hill was a bad rookie and wouldn't play him.

D'Antoni really let his success with the Suns get to his head. I just can't see a player like LeBron, Wade, or Bosh playing for that son of a gun.

It's New York City! "See ya" is polite compared to other common send off messages from New Yorkers.

Let's differentiate cutting ties with apples with his comments of "see ya". The Rockets, after the McGrady deal, have said that they believe McGrady can return to elite form and could make them look bad. The only bad mouthing came from McGrady, and even that was kept to the minimum. (Where was the Stephen A Smith interview we were all expecting?) Von Wafer was offered a contract, though it wasn't acceptable to him. Artest the same -- so I don't think they're on the same par as D'Antoni's comments. I've never seen Morey or Coach Adelman saying, "See ya!"

As far as why would they listen to their coach.. because they want a job in the NBA? The Knicks have plenty of room, they could be essentially auditioning for a job. What coach would want to bring in a player that quit on his team and went for the individual statistics? What player would want to play in a culture that accepts or tolerates that?

So you agree that it was the wrong for him to say that to the media -- basically you agree with my entire argument! Whether it was the truth or not, it's not the classy or appropriate remark to make, especially when you live in a city that thrives on the media. The Rockets have had plenty of chances to make similar remarks about their departing disgruntled remarks, but they have refrained from doing so -- that's a first-class organization.

He may have always been like this.. but you don't get away with it when your team sucks. :)
