Les and Watson wanted to wait till after the labor dispute to even consider the idea. Yea there is a sweethart deal now and probably a few struggling teams looking for a new home but houston is a really fickle sports city can we really handle another mojor league team? Let's get rid of the comets and just stick to the big 3. oh......and a MLS team...that's different. This is the IDEAL city for a soccor team and the attendence expectations are a lot lower.
I don't know what the Comets average attendance is, but it might be more than what an NHL team would bring.
Speaking of attendance at Comets games, entensity.net posted a vid of a fan dancing (gay man to be exact) in the stands. It was pretty funny and to make it on entensity's website, is pretty big
Houston could easily support hockey if the team was a winner (with some real playoff success). If they weren't, they wouldn't draw more than 10,000 on any given night. The NHL isn't even a major sport anymore, so I doubt the "prestige" factor even comes into play. I heard they're going to be on Spike TV next year... yikes (espn dropped them).
Houston should convert Rice stadium into the first outdoor NHL hockey ring ~ who wouldn't love that? The Houston Icestros...
No. A hockey team would just take away valuable radio talk time from the Rockets. It would never work here anyway.
does Houston REALLY need a basketball team? I voted yes to keep the Rockets in town, but I was never to able to convince myself it was the right thing to do as a matter of policy. I should go find Preacher Balke.
I saw that, kind of funny. By the way, if anyone wanders over to that site, BEWARE...It's NOT safe for work. repeat....NSFW!!!
Yeap, you could PASS in Soccer, Basketball, Football, Hockey, or maybe even Lacrosse or Volleyball and Rugby. Not TENNIS. Yeah, you're right... we have Westside Tennis Club for that and the Wranglers. The Wranglers????? WTF?
No Houston has the Aeros, and that's good enough. It's a great value, and a whole lot of fun. For under $15, you can usually get a good seat. For an NHL team, hockey fans would be stuck up in the upper deck, which would suck. Houston has no business having a hockey team.
i don't think houston, like other southern USA cities, can support a losing team. sure, they'd do fine supporting a top quality team just as tampa bay, dallas, and probably a few others for periods of time, but overall, they would just turn into another phoenix or pittsburgh. you guys have the aeros - i'm sure they're fun to watch, as i enjoy minor league games a lot as well -- it's closer to the action, but lacks the overall energy and entertainment of an NHL game -- but it does have it's perks. oh...and support for the rockets has to go up - too many times i see a picture from a houston game and there are tons of empty seats.
Actually, people have bought the tickets AND showed up, but they just are too busy drinking and partying at any number of "lounges".
i did, but, now i dont. what they need to do is contract about six teams to 24 teams. six team divisions within two conferences.
Hockey is worthless.........they lock themselves out, kill their sport and now they want forgiveness for what they've done. To top it off, they won't even attempt to knock ticket prices down. At least after the NBA lockout, a lot of teams delegated $10 in some obscure section of the stadium. It wasn't much, but at least it was something. Hockey wouldnt make it here anyways, most Houston fans are such bandwagon hoppers, that the moment the team smells like it's losing, nobody around here will care to attend.
