Does anyone have any specific information on Rockets cap situation this summer? I know Steve will start enjoying his fat juicy contract, and that takes alot of space I guess. Does anyone know how much they will have and if they will be able to sign any decent FAs?

This is the best information I have.

Exclusive of James Posey, the Rockets are over the cap by about $7m with 9 players under contract. The Rockets will likely attempt to re-sign (offer) Posey around $4.5-$5.0m. This takes them near the Luxury Tax level which Rockets management has expressed a desire to not cross.

    So...

    $54 - ($49m + $4.5m) = $0.5m

My conclusion is not much possibility of an FA signing.

Their seemingly best way to improve is to parley Rice's expiring contract into younger, better fitting talent. Coupled with trades of either Cato or Cat or both to fill spots better needed by Rox.

Alexander is going to have to strongly consider the MLE and pay luxury tax if the West continues to outpace the Rox in quality.

IMO, you are correct on both counts but it is most unlikely that any team will give us a younger more talented player solely for Rice's expiring contract. The other teams will want (or need for balancing the trade $) to add another player with a "bad" contract as well. I feel this would be the case for any team seeking cap space next summer.

Also IMO, Alexander may consider breaching the LT level very slightly for the right FA. For example, if the Rockets move Rice + Cato to upgrade the PF or SF positition, someone like Elden Campbell at a reasonable price might interest them to go over slightly.

I see a blockbuster Matt Maloney signing in the offseason.

Technically, he's still under contract with the Rockets. How sad is that?

Hmm...the only thing we can sign is WangZhiZhi...or Mengke Bateer. WHO ELSE MAKES MINIMUM WAGE THESE DAYS?!? :(

Well I think they should resign Posey...unless they obtain someone even better like Lamar Odom or Jon Barry.
