I don't know if I have sleep apnea, but I've never been what you call a solid sleeper. Maybe insomnia. I'll wake up after 5 hours to go to the bathroom and many times my brain just clicks on and I can't go back to sleep. Drives me crazy. Doesn't help out at work, I can say that.

I go to U fo H on monday, wensday, and friday, and i have to wake up at 5:30am on those days, but tuesday and thursday i can wake up at whatever time i want, so in the 2 and half years that i've been in collage i still have trouble weaking up everyday i go to school because i am still not used to weaking up in the morning on a daily basis. What I saw on CNN was an article about people who need sleep, it recomends that people take a 30 minute nap every day but it has to be done before 5 o clock in the afternoon. and after 7:00pm don't have any coffe or coke, it has personally helped me.

i feel ya buddy. i probably average about 5 hrs a night. i just have the hardest time falling asleep, but i also wake up at the slightest noise. it really sucks. fortunately for me, i've gotten used to the small amount of sleep and dont even think about it much anymore. heavy boozing and lots of pot help, though. you should try that.

I go to sleep at 2am and wake up at 5:30-6am on weekdays. I've been trying to go to sleep earlier, but the earliest I can sleep is about 1am if I'm really tired. On weekends I'm up until 6-7am, then I go to sleep and wake up by 10-11am. Much of this is due to the fact I was a workaholic in my 20's so I think that getting 8 hours of sleep is equivalent to being unconscious for 33% of your life which to me is a waste. Now I'm in my early 30's and trying to slow down, but it's tough. :(

My dad was diagnosed from sleep apnea. He snores REALLY loud because of it.

Poor man must sleep with a monstrous gizmo attached to his face and connected to a machine by the side of the bed.

Sometimes, he'll just sleep in my old bedroom b/c its so uncomfortable, and as to not keep my mom from falling asleep b/c of the snoring.

    trust me, its LOUD

what makes a snore loud versus quiet? Anybody know? And then I guess the next question would be why does that happen....

Well its loud in the fact that you can hear it from other rooms with the door closed. I know when he's napping whenever I visit on the weekends b/c I hear the snoring.

My mom can't sleep a wink when he's snoring, thus he's forced to sleep in another room on the other side of the house, upstairs.

Why does it happen? I don't know the technical aspect to it.

Yeah, I'm not the best of sons... I should probably take greater interest in my family's problems... but its too depressing.

So, emoreland, do you have sleep apnea or insomnia?

I had sleep apnea for about 3 years, but I didn't know it. I just started feeling drained at work more and more...How did this happen?

Well, from 1999 until 2003, I gained weight and my diet connsisted of Pizza, Cheese Burgers and any surgar softdrink. Without any excercise, this just made matters worse. The added weight, caused presure to my diaphram which makes it harder to breath (a larger gut will do that to ya!).

Because of this pressure on my diaphragm, I noticed that I didn't breath exclusively through my nose...but rather mostly my mouth (compensate)...thus, I would not keep my tongue/mouth closed very well. But it was pointless, because, while breahing through my mouth/nose it gave me enough air to fall asleep, it didn't last. In the middle of the night I'd gag for air in radom intervals; my tongue would fall back and push the uvula to the back of my throat, causing my nasal passage to close. That's why I would wake up tired.

Breathing through you nose is the only way. But if you've gained weight, have a bad diet, and sleep on your back, this makes for a bad situation. Breathing through my mouth made that little "uvula" fall into my throath and cause me to gasp for air. That's why it's important to breath through your nose. Keep your mouth closed! No cheating! :)

If you can't, then it may be due to other factors like I metioned: diet, weight, and/or a phisical problem that may need surgery.

    So...this is what I've learned:

    1) Loose weight; exercise
    2) Watch your diet
    3) Keep your mouth shut, press your tonge on the roof of your mouth, and breath through you nose. I had to unlearn the bad habit of breathing through my mouth/nose (half and half) at night.
    4) Don't try to sleep through distractions, like the phone, or friends, or outside noise. If it's noisy and busy, then you have a problem (college dorms). Take the phone off the hook.
    5) Don't eat before you go to bed. Maybe something light. But no heavy foods! Your digestive system works overtime if you do. That takes energy.

    I sleep a lot better now! :D

Y'all should try being a rotating shift worker like myself.

Sleep patterns? What are sleep patterns? I sleep during the day when I work nights and sleep at night when I work days. Throw in some overtime and I may not sleep at all.
