    Hey guys,
I'm a senior in high school and I'm trying to get into UT Austin. But I am not in the top 10% of my class(barely missed it). But they will be having provisional classes next year at Arlington. Do any of you have any idea what Arlington is like? Or if you have any info about the University there please let me know. If you have no idea it's cool, I'm gonna miss Houston so much next year and they probably will only show Mavericks games.

I lived just north of Arlington and Arlington is boring. The Ballpark in Arlington is located there... (duh)... That's all I can say. [IMG]

If you haven't already visited UTA's site, you can go to : www.uta.edu

If you want information about the city of Arlington, you can go to : www.arlington.org

I live in Arlington. It's a decent place to live. I have even taken a few classes at UTA.

Arlngton is not a college town by any stretch. While it has some of the trappings of a college town (some bars and stuff like that), but it's not like Austin by any stretch. The college itself is more of a commutert-ype University. They have some people living on or near campus, but the bulk of people drive from home. Many students still live with their parents, and there is also a sizeable percentage of the studentbody who is older, non-traditional students. There are also fewer "college" type activities available for students because of the commuter nature of the school.

I would liken attending UTA as being more like going to a Junior College than like going to a place like UT-Austin.

Arlington itself is a kind of conservative town, but it's close enough to Dallas to partake of much of the nightlife that Dallas offers. I like living here, but I'm also older (29) and don't do a lot of the partying stuff.

You're right, by the way. Rockets games are a very rare occurance on TV in Arlington. Astros games are more common.

Arlington is home to six flags, hurricane harbor, and the rangers. Very close to dallas. Nice area also.

salsa, it's all about the SAT. I go to UT, and I think that is what got me in. Otherwise, you will have to be #110 of 1108 to get an automatic invite.

It's a not a rejection that he's talking about. Students who don't qualify for admission but who show some promise can be given a probationary admission. In the past, that meant the student would take summer school classes at UT-Austin to qualify for admission. UT is now trying to change it so that students who qualify for probationary admission are sent to UTA for their Freshman year. If they make above a certain GPA, they then automatically gain admission to UT-Austin for their sophomore year.

And gr8-1 is right. UT-Austin has a formula for admission. Depending on your class rank (which is a bogus thing to base admissions decisions on, by the way), you will have to score a certain amount on the SAT to gain admission. I'm sure the scale in on their website somewhere.

But spending a year at UTA is not bad, either. Actually, in some ways it may be a good thing. UTA has smaller classes (which is more conducive to doing well. I went to Tech, and I had classes with 150 people in it. It's even worse at UT, I hear) and it's more likely that your classes will be taught by a professor instead of a grad student. There are also likely to be fewer distractions at UTA over UT. So, a student can more easily make the transition from high school to college life by having that year at UTA.

Also, think about attending a JUCO. IT helps you mature. But, I know you prolly also want to experience college life. I will tell you this : UT is alot harder then some people think. I haven't heard one people say it is a cakewalk.

Your class has over 1100 people in it? Good Lord. Are you one of those high schools that's basically a self-contained city? Over 5000 students?

Thanks alot guys, I really appreciate the info cuz like I said before I don't get outside of Houston all that often. But to answer T-salsa's question: You won't be accepted automatically if you are not in the top 10% of your class(but you do have one huge sophomore class, is that a Houston area high school?). I was hoping Arlington wasn't gonna be too boring but from everybody's feedback it might be a long year.

i go to kingwood high school. we are the largest class ever to go through. our high school has a 9th grade campus just for freshmen. there are im guessing around 3500-4200 students total. that number might change and go lower or higher. right now becuz of dropouts and failure im guessing its around 1080.

i hate that top 10% rule. my high school is highly competetive in every area esp. academics. im friends w/ the girl who is #1 in our class right now, and while she is really really smart (and hot [IMG] ) she isnt light years ahead of anybody in the top quarter where i am. she is really smart and works hard though.

i take 3 honors classes. im in key club. i know i will have to do very well on the SATs. i just hope getting in isnt going to be extremely difficult as school right now is kicking my butt.

i am not ruling out JUCO at all.

gr8-1 if i may ask what score did u make on the SATs? i know that really counts alot. i am aiming for 1300-1400. i really think i can get that. will that be enough?

im also in track and do extra curricular stuff.

so lemme get this straight? UTA is a mini college for "maybe ill accept you" students to UT?

Texasalsa, let's just say I scored under a 1500 (ok, ok 1400+). It's pretty high, but nothing unusual, imo. 1300 SHOULD get you into UT, but ya never know. SAT's aren't the only thing they look at, and I think they are somewhat overrated. But, do your best. It would look great to have that.

If you're an A student and you score say an...........820, you can be admitted to Blow-U's honors program. 20 more points and you can get in atm's Business program. [IMG]

It's true salsa, if you don't crack the top 10% and you don't want to go to provisional you can make a 920 on your SAT's and be close to guaranteed admission at A&M. I have tons of forms and requirements for tons of Texas schools but I only really care about UT.

With that said, I know know nothing about it! Isn't there a good Six Flags theme park around?

Im beginning to understand. will it really really hinder my chances of going to UT if im not in the top 10% though? i know i am gonna do pretty good on the SATs and ACT. but will not being in the top 10% hurt my greatly or just a little.

TexasSalsa - less than half of all students admitted to UT this past year were admitted under the 10% plan.

If you rock the SAT, finish consistently and get an application in on time with some good essays you'll probably get in. But who knows, they had 21k applicants last year they might raise the bar a little to cut back on the number of incoming freshman.

So the trick is to move to a smaller, dumber school if a person wants to get into UTexas for sure these days.

One of my cousins was part of a two-person graduating class. She had something in the neighborhood of a 75 average (out of 100), but she was the Valedictorian of her class. And the other guy didn't even make it into the Top 50% of the class. [IMG]
