Does Any One Contender Have as Big a Weakness as Houston at PG?

...other than Boston and "supporting cast"..?

I say this because it seems like every online publication mentions our hole at point guard as one obstacle to us claiming the title. It seems to be even on par with the concern over Boston essentially having only 3 NBA players on their roster.

I list the contenders as San Antonio, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Boston, and Utah.

Aside from Boston, every team outside of Houston has a balanced lineup with no glaring weaknesses and most importantly, a steady hand at point guard.

The reason this is such a revelation to me is because until I actually gave it thought, I always operated under the assumption that every contender had some weakness due to the memory of the media's constant harping on the fact that Barkley's Suns and Malone's Jazz wouldn't win a title without stability at the center position. Now with the game's evolution towards speed and athleticism, this need to plug a "hole" at center has been completely obviated, while the need for a steady hand at guard has become a total must.

This isn't a thread intended to discuss Rafer Alston or Mike James. I'm a big Mike James fan but he is far from a "steady" hand and Alston, while steady, is a liability offensively. Should this be considered a huge concern?

San Antonio and Dallas don't have centers. Utah don't have shooting guard, and Phoenix don't have big men and no bench but 7 great dwarfs. Every team had weakness because of the salary cap.

But of course in the last 5 minutes of the game, the PG is the most crucial as opposing teams will concentrate on pressuring the PG.

Well, now you know why Rox always have problems in the last 5 minutes of the game.

It depends on the makeup of your team. The Bulls, Rockets and Lakers won without studly PG's.

Look at your question. Essentially you're asking whether or not Nash, Parker, Williams, and Terry are better than James, Alston et al. Of course they are, that's a simple question - those guys are all current or former all-star, elite players. But then you could identify one position on any of the teams you listed and identify it as super weak, especially relative to the Rockets - no team has 5 all stars on the floor at once.

Diop and Oberto are serviceable in today's NBA and in no way hurt their teams. As I stated in my post, either team can get away with playing a small lineup with no center as well, so it's not even an issue.

As far as Utah not having a shooting guard, shooting guard is probably the least important position on the court, and it's not even like Denver where they have no shooters - Giricek, Harpring, etc can all shoot the '3'.

Houston's problem at point guard has a direct impact on the game.

    No.

The question isn't that at all.

The question is essentially asking whether the gap between Nash/Parker/Williams/Terry and Alston/James is overwhelmingly greater than the gap between Yao and Oberto or McGrady and whoever for Utah, and Battier and Raja Bell (if that's even a weakness, it's not).

    And it is, especially considering:
    1) how important a position point guard is
2)that those teams can mask their weaknesses while we can't (playing small ball)
3)you can even take Yao and Duncan as counterparts, to where there isnt even any advantage because Hayes and Oberto are equals.

The question is whether this glaring hole can be overcome.

You can add the Bird's Celtics and Shaq's other finals team, the Heat.

you are overblowing the importance of having a PG - when a Diop can't buy an offensive rebound or when Okur flops and doesn't get a whistle becuase he can't play defense otherwise - it hurts those teams quite a bit. That is why they are not 82-0.

Finally, as others have said, if having a great PG is so important then how did Ron Harper - a converted small forward, for chrissake, play PG for 5 championship teams. The guy had zero traditional PG skills.

If small ball works then why are the Big-man deep Spurs the reigning dynasty and the Suns the Alydar of the western conference? Why did John Stockton, the greatest traditional PG ever, go championshipless while Kenny Smith, Derek Fisher, and Ron Harper have more rings than Saturn?

Honestly I don't care if the Suns can use small ball against Memphis during the regular season cause they aren't afraid of Swift. In a grind-out playoff game against Yao or Boozer or whoever they are going to have trouble like they did with Duncan.

they had larry hughes playing the point most of the season...

and now, daniel gibson >>>>>>>>> rafer

im not a rafer hater, but i dont believe he is going to get the job done. i would so much prefer mike james to start, and francis come off the bench (provided he gets in shape)

rafer is just not the guy

It really makes you wonder how bad Francis must be playing to not get a sniff.

Maybe Aaron Brooks at some point?

Tonight Rafer and James were horrid....but Yao...and Tmac....and Bonzi....

    Man this team is versitile.

The game has changed dramatically from what it was 10-15 years ago. Now the league places a premium on quickness and athleticism. The slow, grind it out physical games of the 90s and 80s are gone. In those days, having a big, physical center was key because the position exemplified everything about physical grind it out basketball.

Fast forward 20 years and we see the pace of the game has changed, largely due to the new rules put in place. All the great teams have great PGs: SA has Parker, Utah has DWill, Phx has Nash, and Dallas has Terry and Harris. IMO, the PG position is NOW the most important position in basketball. Our PG hole I thought would be somewhat ameliorated with the addition of James, but so far I have been disappointed with what I've seen. He seems to have fallen rapidly since his last stint with us in 05. Hope I am wrong.
