Bought two tickets to the musical Wicked for my wife's birthday. Of course the show is sold out til autumn due to the influx of NYC tourists so I went with a scalper on Craigslist. Met my contact in front of the theater but instead of the gruff sounding older guy from the phone there was a teenager with my tickets. First red flag. He had the ticketmaster printouts instead of the cardboard ones. Second (possible) red flag. Lucky for me, I had been late to my pre-theater drinks and missed the tequilla shots. I was alert enough to hand my wife one of the tickets and sent her in while I waited with the kid and my other ticket. About two minutes later, my wife comes out looking a tad upset and I grabbed the kid. "My money please" I politely ask. My wife shows up and mentions that the tickets were purchased with a stolen cc. The kid hands me my $300 and I let him go. The theater manager was mad at me for letting him go, but it takes two hands to count a pile of 20s. My wife was so psyched that we didnt lose the money that she was cool about the whole thing. We were able to get dinner reservations at a really cool place for tomorrow night so we're gonna reset (her birthday is actually Monday) Man I hate scalpers, but I am constantly forced to use them. Usually I have no problems, but this one coulda been bad. Anyone else ever been ripped off by one?
i actually got two free 2nd row tickets for the nutcracker from my boss in NYC. anyways, i saw it before and i am not a big fan of shows and such so i sold each tix for $165 ten minutes before the show. personally, i wouldnt trust scalpers.
You got a good head on your shoulders, mateo. It's good that your spidey-sense went off. Bought some concert tickets off E-bay once for my girlfriend. I had trouble getting them sent to me, and I started getting nervous as the day of the concert approached. After two consecutive failed delivery attempts, the guy eventually just e-mailed me e-tickets. I know the risk of e-tickets, but I figured since the guy already had my money and had an E-bay reputation to maintain that he wouldn't go to the effort to screw me over (and no one's going to settle for ticketmaster e-tickets on E-bay). On a different note, I'm going to see Wicked next month in Chicago with my girlfriend, and I'm looking forward to it.
i've always had good luck with scalpers. an old guys wife was sick at the hospital - and he was selling nhl tickets in edmonton (close to where i go to university) - so i bought the tickets off him for the canucks game (last season that there was a season) for $50 bucks a ticket while everybody else was selling them for $200 for worse seats. i took his number and got tickets from him at this rate whenever i wanted. the face value on the tickets was $80 a piece. i felt good taking advantage of a sad situation - but obviously he could afford it and just wanted to get rid of the things - so this was a win/win. probably got around 20 tickets to games off of him that year. otherwise, don't really use scalpers.
