I remember playing this in school (a long long time ago) until people got hurt. It was outlawed after that. Not sure about the rest of the country, but it is getting popular up here in the Northeast. They have leagues and playoffs and all that. Anyway, they are have an Extreme Dodgeball Marathon on the Game Show channel all day today. Also found this addictive dodgeball game online. Can you win the Championship? I think NOT! http://www.freeonlinegames.com/play/381.html
Dodgeball was one of the few sports I was good at when I was younger. This one game, I was untouchable. Was ducking and sliding at all the right times, and generally felt like a god. *cough*
back in elementary school, we played Pin Dodge Ball, which was by far everyone's favorite game to play on friday's in gym (beating out Sink the Bismark--hitting people with football's but with no teams, just every man for himself--and Tire Tug). there were 3 pins set up on the backline of each team's side so you could either hit everyone with the ball or knock down those 3 pins to win. i was never particularly good nor bad, but my best moment was either hitting this one big dude who wasn't really looking and then having it bounce off him and hit another pretty big guy (though neither guy went out so it kinda sucked the fun out of that moment) or having already been knocked out and while sitting on the side, rolling a ball slowly to the other side and watching it slowly go untouched and end up knocking down a pin. glorious moments i know. however, the true glory of Pin Dodge Ball was only fully realized at the social event of elementary school life, the Annual 4th vs 5th grade Pin Dodge Ball Game. i can't even believe this was somehow a tradition but it was definitely eagerly anticipated by all. hell you started looking forward to it from like 2nd grade. our 4th grade year, we actually took a game from the 5th graders out of the 7 or 8 that were played, becoming, as legend would have it (and you know how on the money 4th graders are with historical information), only the second 4th grade to ever win a game. our 5th grade year, we smoked those young punks 8-0. no one could mess with us. (edit: now that i think about it, i'm not quite sure how we got the whole 4th grade and whole 5th grade on one side of the gym each considering there were approximately 100 kids in each grade. must've been some crazy action to start the game) Pin Dodge Ball, the greatest game ever invented.
If we only had a few people and one ball we play up against a brick wall. Everybody stood up against the wall except for the one who had the ball and he would throw the ball at us until he hit everyone or someone caught it. Then he would get to step out and throw the ball. It hurt too, especially if you were hit in the head. That was a double whammy. Ball hits your head then your head hits the bricks. I liked dodgeball but I was more of a 4 Square kid.
i remembering playing a similar game except it was with a tennis ball. i think if you caught the ball you got a free hit on the guy who threw it. i forgot the rules but it was pretty popular in the day.
we used to play this game all the time, except we called it Speed and used a tennis ball. damn, that ****e was fun. man, the memories.
