Some times as fan, you perceive a certain slight when the other team talks smack when doing well that you don't see when your team does the same thing. As a specific example, I couldn't help but be angered by Ricky Davis' running of his mouth as the Celtics dismantled the Rockets last week. However, I wondered if I was just being a sore-loser.

Well, as it turns out, the Celtics coach - Doc Rivers - saw the same thing:

"We came out running our mouths and acted like a low-class basketball team. We didn't show them any respect," said Rivers, who noticed an unhealthy increase in his team's trash-talking during a road victory at Houston five nights earlier. "That was a team excited about a winning streak and not acting like a winning team...I should have done a better job of stopping it earlier."

I love what Tim Thomas said about Ricky Davis after the Knicks blew the Celtics out:

"He was running his mouth. Don't talk it if you can't back it up," Thomas said. "It's not even MTV, and he got punked."

I had a long plane ride with Doc once and he's a really class act and I thought you guys might enjoy seeing that he noticed his teams inappropriate lack of respect for ours as well.

I was at that game and only a few rows away from the Celtics bench and they talked the entire game and were even getting into it with some of the crowd, it was pretty tacky

I think it's just Ricky Davis more than anyone else. "Class" is not a word you would ever hear associated with that guy. I think he is the one Doc Rivers kicked out of practice earlier this year for screaming profanities in practice in front of a group of students.

I was blown away when he boarded the plane last and sat right next to me. 'Course I went through the awkward looking and looking away bit, followed by the inevitable "Are you..."

Anyway, what really impressed me was that I asked a couple of basic questions and then told him that I'd leave him alone as I'm sure he gets bugged all the time. He then proceeds to tell me how he enjoys talking bball with anyone and would love to keep talking. At first I didn't know if he was just being polite or not, but after a while it became apparent that this guys is a just a genuinely friendly person.

(By the way, this was about 5 years ago when he coached Orlando and was the summer when they signed TMac and GHill)

That's pretty sweet that you got to sit right next to Doc. I've always liked Doc Rivers, he's always been a respectable, classy guy.

It's not just Ricky. They have Gary "The Mouth" Payton.

Actually, though, that kinda stuff is, indeed, part of the game. If you don't have the mental toughness, the talk will definitely get to you. I really don't mind a little trash talking going on on the court. I kind of encourage it.

Well according to McGrady, Doc Rivers isn't a real coach.

He was too inexperienced when he coached T-Mac, so nothing personal there I think, especially when you compare him to one of the best coaches in the league who has had lots of success in the past (JVG). I don't think McGrady was dissing him or anything.

But as for Bosotn, they are a childish amateurish team, and no not just because they talked trash to the Rockets when they beat us here, but they do that EVERY single game against other teams as well. I got the chance to watch them a few times and that is just their demeanor. The sad thing is I respect Paul Pierce a lot (and like the guy) but he is starting to emulate Ricky Davis' habits on the court, something you definitely don't want to happen. Walker is more subtle but he also disrespects opponents a lot with that jiggly move he does sometimes when he scores:rolleyes:

That was Doc's first experience as a coach and I think he was trying a little too hard to be everyone's best friend. After all, he was a player at one time and figured that he could relate to them at that level.

You can tell he's definitely learned that sometimes you have to crack the whip and be a coach - as opposed to a player who's now coaching the team.

Trash talking is not part of the game. It's part of the sports culture here. I always believe that if you have to use demeaning words to "get to" your opponent, than your real game isn't speaking loud enough.

My biggest surprise was seeing Gary Payton get into the smack. He is a vet and should have known better but then again he is the glove and he has a history of doing that.

One would think that Gary will finally shut his trap after getting humiliated last year. Not him though, too much pride. Just another guy I am glad that never won a championship.
