I do not tip when picking up food. But, it does feel a little strange when you have to pay by credit card and you have to put the 0 on the tip line..

I have never understood the reasoning for tipping on a carryout when YOU are the one who has to drive to the place. If tipping is required for that, then you might as well tip every time you go through a drive-thru. Now deliveries are a different story - I always tip at least 20% sometimes more if they get my order to me early enough.

Isnt the purpose of a tip to offset the costs of gasoline by the delivery driver? In addition to this some delivery places, now charge an extra buck or two for delivery.

Seems kinda counterintuitive to tip someone when there is no extra service involved.

    Oh that....paying extra...

Well I just give them a $100 bill. And when they come to me saying I made a mistake....I just say..

"Keep it. I figured you need it more than I do"

what would the tip be for exactly? you go to the restaurant, pick it up, etc, and even if you do tip, how much? does it make a difference if you have to pick up the food at the bar or not?

    heck no...

unless you feel that you should tip for someone packing up your food, in which case you should prolly tip the baggers at the grocery stores.

but from the bartenders perspective (usually the person who handles takeouts), they are still doing as much work putting your order together as someone who sits at the bar and eats, and someone who sits at the bar and eats is still going to tip. for me, it was always a bigger pain in the ass to handle takeout orders than someone who ate at the bar b/c there was alot of extra work boxing, wrapping and bagging everything up that you didnt have to do if someone just ate there. alot of times you are swamped w/ drink orders (more tip money for less work) and have to go take care of a to go order, only to get no tip.

look at it this way - do you tip your bartender when you order drinks? if you do than why not tip them when they get your food. im not saying you should give them 20%, but at least kick them a buck or something.

If that's the case, and I sit at the bar waiting for the food, I might toss a buck in the jar as I'm leaving, but that's not the case most of the time. It just depends. More accurate would be that I rarely tip, but sometimes I do. Never 20%. if I have a drink at the bar while I wait, of course I tip for the drink service, like I always do.

I tip a dollar or so. Not because I'm generous or anything, but because I always go back to the same places, and even a $1 tip ensures that your food is packaged correctly.

I knew a "carry out" worker at Chilis.

He got paid like $6.50/hr and he hated his job. He expected to get $0.50 tip or at least the rounded up change to a dollar for putting together your order. He got the food from the kitchen and had to put it in a to-go box etc.

And if you ever plan on going back, i think you should kick back the change at least. Those kids remember voices man.

Its funny, i was thinking about making a thread like this a few weeks ago. I, myself, don't, its pointless cause the only service they gave u was making your food thats it, in which I am paying for already. My guess thats why they usually let the bartender do the take out orders, since they get a crapload in tips anyways.

I was hoping in "Waiting" they would bring up this situation, but they never did.

Its funny that u say they mention voice when you do take out orders at Chili's. When I used to work over at 59/Kirby, when I ordered at Chili's on Buffalo Speedway, they usually hooked me up whenever I ordered Boneless Buffalo Wings, usually almost doubling my order. :)

Yeah, I knew a guy who used to do Maggiano's carry out. He said pretty much the same thing, that they do more than you realize and put up with a lot more crap than you'd expect. He always tipped them a buck, so now I do the same.
