In 3 years, Ming will be a 24-13-5-5 guy and the top center in the league. Shaq will retire in 3 years. Do you think the Lakers will go after Yao like what they did with Shaq when he was in Orlando?

Yao can be the next wave of great Laker centers (Mikan, Chamberlain, Kareem, Shaq, MING?).

Yao would be a restricted free agent if his contract was up.

The rockets could, and would match any offer.

guys.. i do not care one bit about jungle boy Wallace but intentionally playing dirty is not right.. Wallace needs to learn how to beat someone using skill not ghetto cheap shots like what he proclaimed in his comment... if yao gets hurt by Wallaces cheap tricks, there will be alot of Rox fans seeking revenge..

You never explained the "jungle boy" angle mrbasketball. Please respond. And thanks in advance.

These statements seem wildly optimistic for a guy that hasn't played a single NBA game - but I like your thinking.

I dont see any reason why Yao would'nt be a Rocket past his 3 year contract. If he can be loyal to the Chinese team where the talent is pathetic, he can definately be loyal to the Rockets.

Ming will stay a Rocket for alot longer than three years; as long as he puts up stats around 16, 11, and 3 or better he have nothing to worry about as far as the Rockets trading him. Now as for him leaving I don't think so. He said himself that he always wanted to be in Houston and that Hakeem was his favorite player. I know Hakeem isn't here now, but it doesn't hurt that he played for the Rockets for 17 years and they both play the same position.

But Yao can still leave if he chooses right??? I think that is what Shaq did. Orlando matched the offer but Shaq still left for LA. I think Duncan will be in the same position next year.

The Rox hold the option on his forth year, and i would be amazed not to see the option exercised. His fifth year is open for negotiation, with the Rox owning the right to match/equal any contract offered, and retain his rights regardless of the players desire. This is what has just happened with Davis/Cle & GSW did to us with M Jackson.

Yao is NOT like that; greedy. Yao is also not after the limelight
    like Shaq was...

Shaq left Orlando because he didn't want to create
a legacy in Orlando on "Mickey Mouse" and the "Wonderful World of
Disney." He felt that the market and enviornment wasn't for him.
He wanted to go to a city that had a big nightlife.

A retirement resort city like Orlando just didn't fit Shaq. In fact, he
was too big for Orlando. By the way, it wasn't easy for Jerry West to get
Shaq to move. It was a "painfull experience" for Jerry (his words).
For Shaq, add the fact that Penny Hardaway was injured, help him
make his mind up to move.

Shaq also liked the fact that the Lakers were willing to pay him BIG BUCKS
and follow a line of great centers from the past. "Be part of the legacy," I'm
    sure they told him.

Players want to come to HOUSTON because they know that we have
a great coaching staff, program, and practice facillity. Also, we have a big
basketball history. So, Houston is a very good basketball town for Yao and
any other player that wants to come here.

P.S. Shaq will NOT retire from basketball in 3 year. He's only 30!!!!

MrBasketball, come on! Seriously, you have no idea on what this guy's personality is like to start with. Are you a Lakers fan? If you are, I can understand you dreaming of having Ming on the roster in the future. However, this is not going to happen, infact, Ming will be the continuation of Houston's own "wave" of Centers. Moses and Hakeem come to mind. Don't you just love the thought of Shaq bricking hook shots into the side of the backboard, while Yao scores 30+ on him? ;)

In all honesty there is no way to know, but I believe that Yao's loyalty is greater than Shaq's. Having said that I see him in Houston for the duration of his career, unless he becomes one of those players that don't know when to retire, and become known for their, "veteran leadership".

No doubt about it...Ming will be here because he is not very materialistic, or does'nt appear to be...In addition he seems to be someone made to commit associated with honor...

I think Yao will be here after 3 years. The organization will surely take care of him, and try to make him happy.

The team will just be in their prime with all of it's young players entering their peak. I think he'll want to stay and see the mission through.

But if the Rockets keep making teh playoffs and keep inching closer and closer to the CHAMPIONSHIP - you can ALMOST guarantee that NONE of the Rockets will want to leave cuz they ALL will want to STAY to WIN that RING! This is NOt just on Yao but ANY of the YOUNG Rockets aka Griffin, Yao, and the rest of the gang!

So everyone hop on the Rockets Bandwagon while you CAN!
    Cuz here we GO!

This reminds me alot of the "Steve Francis will sign with Washington" threads that we saw a few years ago.

Yao Ming will sign a standard rookie scale contract. It's a 3 year deal, with a team option for a 4th year. After the fourth year, he's a restricted free agent, so the Rockets have the right of first refusal. The Rocket's have him for 4 years + a 5th year if they are willing to pay him as much as any other team. Also realize that we'll have Bird rights on Yao, so it would be impossible for any team to outbid us for his services.

Do we really need to worry about him leaving in 5 years? Especially for LA? 5 years from now the Rockets could be a contender and the Lakers could be rebuilding. Why not enjoy the building of a contender rather than worrying about something that might happen in 5 years?

5 years from now: Shaq is retiring to be a cop. Kobe wants out. Jerry West declares the Grizzlies "Lakers East" and try to sign Yao and get Kobe for another die-nasty.:D :D

edit: And Drew Gooden finally figures out where Memphis is.

I think yao will have his whole nba career with the Rox... Yao doesn't seem to care about how much money a team will offer him. He just want to play for the Rox...Beside Rudy T. and yao ming have strong bond....:D
