Do you think the NBA should keep track of Dunks per game stat?

After watching Yao demolish the Korean team in the Asian Championships, his stat line for the final game read 7 dunks. He led the championships with an average of around 4dunks per game.

Anyway, want do you guys think if the NBA kept dunks per game as a statistic? I think that'd be great. And if so, who do you think would rate in the top 5??

    1. Shaq
    2. Duncan
    3. KG
    4. Yao
    5. V.Carter/Webber (if they can come back from injury)

I think I'd only support a dunks stat if it combined dunks AND layups. Dunks are fun, but I don't need it in my box score. However, it would be helpful to know what percentage of shots made and attempted are point-blank.

Not to sound like the BBS police, but this'll probably end up in the NBA Dish forum...

But dunks per game, in my opinion, would only promote the SportsCenter generation's habits all the more. By giving it a statistical category, it would give players more incentive to be "showboaters." For every person that criticizes Franchise's way, there would be a player trying to be the league's dunk champion.

Look at it this way...when David Robinson scored 70 points in the last game because his team wanted him to win the scoring title that year, it took away from the Spurs' team game because he was striving for an individual accord. This would only create another category to do so with and further tarnish American basketball's image overall by creating more slam dunk artists.

I just don't think it would be good for the game. I would personally like it, but I don't think it would be wise.

    I have another question:

Why there is no statistics to record the player who successfully draws an offensive foul? Shouldn't we have to give credit to this player as he forces a turnover from the opposite team and help his team to gain the possession again?

Can anybody answer me? Thanks in advance.

Not sure if they keep dunk stats now, but I know that they used to.

Back in the championship days, it was mentioned from time to time how Otis Thorpe led the league in dunks.

Absolutely. This is why at least once EVERY game you hear Calvin shout "Stop and pop, stop and POP".

That statistics is actually useful. Forcing an offensive foul is in fact better than a steal, since your get one more foul on your opponent.
