Its clearly obvious to me at least that Calvin wants to be the next head coach of the Houston Rockets. For some reason I just pick up that vibe when I hear his commentaries. Its always something to the tune of: "Bill what the Rockets need to do is penetrate the ball......"

I cant help but like Calvin...he and Bill are a good team. His comments about strategy and the game are usually pretty relavent (unlike most commentators who like to explain the obvious..for example, many say things like: "They really need to score more points if they expect to win this game." or "If they dont pick up their defense to another level, the other team will continue scoring at will." Calvin usually wont do that)...anyway...I dont know how he would be as a head coach...He might be pretty good...His suits would at least temporarily blind the opposing team...

I know a few guys that have played for Calvin before in summer leagues, and every single one says he is the HUGEST (bad word)...

I don't know... Maybe it's a lot different if you're dealing with NBA players, but he would definitely be one of those demanding perfectionist coaches... and I don't necessarily mean the good kind... (a la Riley)

Even though the "M" haircut stands for ME, I like Calvin. However, after 20 games, the players would get tired of him starting every sentence with one of these phrases:

    1) I should suit up
    2) I could run this play better
    3) I would have run the play THIS way
    4) Do you have a cookie?
    5) Bend your knees!

If you really pay attention, he does say the obvious quite often, especially his keys to the games...he probably repeats these every game..."you must cut down on turnovers to be sucessfull in this league"..."must make your free throws"...and the classic "points in the paint" talk...

Don't get me wrong, I love calvin, but the only thing that bothers me about his commentary is that he quite often say I told you so once his keys to the game are correct...even though the keys to the game are soooo obvious...

I really think Calvin Murphy would be a great coach to a young team like the Rockets. I'm not saying he should take Rudy's job or anything like that but I feel he has great knowledge of the game and great chemistry with the players in today's generation. He's really energetic and he loves to teach. I've witnessed a couple of his basketball camps and he's very good at what he does but at the same time he knows how to get the most out of you and is not afraid to get in your face. If it's one thing that suprised me about him is his no-nonsense attitude in camps. I was a member of his marching thunder band that used to perform at the halftimes of the rockets games and after practice we would shoohoops along with his son Murphy jr., who was a senior in high school and murphy sr. would dominate his son in one-on-one basketball with ease and no regret. afterward he would tell him what he did wrong and made him correct. i just believe that a coach like that can probably get a pulse out of a player like Cato, because of his approach, energy, and chemistry with the players. just my opinion.

Hasn't Calvin been promoting himself as a candidate for coaching gigs for years? I think he's better off as an announcer, assistant, or unpaid Free Throw coach!

Calvin would be horrible. HE would want to be THE SHOW and not the players. He would quickly forget that this is a players league. Rudy is the best at recognizing and dealing with that.

I can picture it now. His team would be a pack of jump-shooting ball hogs. Big men would never touch the ball, 'cause the guards would never pass it. Teammates would be stealing the ball from eachother for a chance to shoot.

Well, it wouldn't be that bad, but it would be about that entertaining ;-)

i think he would fit in well with this rockets team, however not as a coach ( i love Rudy T to much) he would be great as a assistant because he would give great tips to the players, etc and he would give good game plans to Rudy T. I think things would get out of hand if Calvin had total contral of a team...

what's wrong with being an "i told you so type guy". the only reason he says "i told you so" is because he has just made a valid point or just made the right call for the right situation. how many times during the game will calvin point out a situation such as " get walt involved", "get bullard involved", "mooch will always find you if you get open", "swing the ball to the weak side", etc....and when he does suggest something and the rockets run it 80% of the times it works. All i'm saying is he points out the weakness in the opposing teams and gives good suggestions on how to exploit them. i know the majority of you guys would say "i told you so" also if you were right occasionally.

I think Calvin would like to be the next coach of the rockets. But that job will be filled by Pat Riley.

    ChenZhen,

I guess you are right about this:

"If you really pay attention, he does say the obvious quite often, especially his keys the games...he probably repeats these every game..."you must cut down on turnovers to be sucessfull in this league"..."must make your free throws"...and the classic "points in the paint" talk..."

However, unlike some commentators, Murphy doesnt provide ONLY obvious remarks ala Bill Walton...Walton likes to state the obvious and then back it up with lists. If he says a team needs to play stronger defense, he will then proceed to list everyone on the team and give a shallow description of what each player needs to do...but even these hollow descriptions are limited to the obvious. commentators like Bill Walton could easily be replaced by an annoying, constant droning hum which just never ceases...

Anyway, I think Murphy is a step above that type of style...during the game Murphy at least seems to make obvious remarks more in cheerleader fashion rather than as an objective commentator flasely believing he is providing valuable insight. Now, that would be very annoying to non-rocket fans...I guess all commentators enjoy stating the obvious. I just think Murphy has a more palatable style...

Though I admit Murphy is sorta an "I told you so" guy...Which I guess could be annoying to players if he was a coach...but I think Murphy is doing well in the place he's at right now...
