Do you take people less seriously if they don't use basic grammar, spelling, and capitalization? Do you ever skip over their posts? Do you give their message less weight and/or downgrade its credibility?

Just something I've been wondering about after seeing an increasing number of people on message boards fail to use basic grammar and capitalization.

No, because I use bad grammar a lot myself.

me thinks its sillie to xpect purfect gramer and copitulation in a internnet tread.

Translation for all you anal folks who require perfect grammar and capitalization in every thread:

I think it is silly to expect perfect grammar and capitalization in an Internet thread.

    :D

Some people are working and are not able to proofread because they are multi-tasking and flipping in and out of different windows (e.g. co-worker is walking by cubicle). Sorry if I cannot meet all your expectations in this regard.

    Sincerely, My Cornholio

This is a message board not english class, I'm more interested in content than whether someone missed a comma or didn't capitalize something. Actually I couldn't care less about either of those things.

You'll notice that the thread topic says basic grammar, not perfect grammar.

Yes, I definitely take them less seriously -- the same as I would on the job. If you can't get the details right on something as simple as spelling and grammar, then chances are, you don't have the focus and/or attention to detail to handle the job.

A person with bad grammar and spelling probably hasn't read much in their life, which is another probable sign of ignorance.

The weird part to me is that it takes just about as long to write out all the letters, since you have to think about it, then to write the word out, which probably comes more naturally since we do it a bunch. Also, most browsers have a spell check feature, which for the spelling-challenged individuals like myself is a godsend.

All in all, yes, I do.

Absolutely I take someone less seriously if they can't abide by BASIC rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

It doesn't REMOTELY have to be perfect. It just has to not be PAINFUL to read. If you don't care enough to make what you write semi-presentable to the people YOU want to read it... then why are you writing it in the first place?

for example it drives me nuts when someone types out a sentence with not only no capitalization but just with no punctuation and i mean at all and theyre so small minded that they seem to get offended when people ask what the hell theyre talking about because punctuation is often very important to actually understanding what someone is saying you know it can actually change the meaning of something like if you dont put a question mark at the end of a sentence thats supposed to be a question or something right and then beyond that someone will just keep rambling and go on and on and on and never even put any paragraph breaks in a post thats like two pages long my god its just so annoying you know

I don't mind typos or maybe misspelling uncommon words - it happens. But there are people I see that can't spell basic words and it cracks me up. I usually take people that continually misspell these words or use phrases they don't know how to use, less seriously.

"Definately", "he was dominate", "we're going to loose", "for all intensive purposes", etc.

And don't get me started on the ones with "ur", "comon", "ne one", etc. strewn about in their posts... :D

    ridiculous..

unless of course you're applying this attitude directly and soley to the irredeemable examples we're routinely subjected to.. by the preteen members of ClutchFans here.. or those whose minds simply are hopelessly, premanently fixed to abiding to that old teenage "pop" banner way of life.. where proving to be an illiterate is conceived as.. "cool".. such as the ever tragically modern sample.. so aptly provided by "Surfguy" there..

myself.. if the mood hits me.. i'll submit a well structured, punctuated post.. there have been some in my posting history.. but, personally.. as you can plainly see.. i'll most often than not.. not.. and i will continue to rarely do so..
and this is coming from avid writer.. and great appreciator of literature.. even the articulate manner i so naturally express myself with in speech.. comes off to some as too rigidly formal, proper, or old-fashioned.. and in the extreme case of moestavern19.. old world..

however.. as others have stated in this very thread.. this an internet forum.. a sports internet forum at that.. if it's not utter and intolerably hideous butchery of the english language.. such as what is now becoming somewhat habitual in Dadakota's rushed postings.. i truly couldn't care less..

    once again.. sports internet forum..

Yes, absolutely. It is one of my biggest pet peeves. Actually probably the biggest. If you can't spell the word "see" or "you", or you can't get the correct "your" or "you're" or if you get "then" mixed with "than", etc. , etc. then yes, I will take you less seriously. If you do this, to me, it shows at least a slight hint of stupidity, and thus, your opinion, counts less to me.

I will give a little leeway for "who's" and "whose."

In most cases I would say no. If it's an interview type situation or a situation that requires someone with good communication skills then obviously yes.

I've always found it entertaining when a friend can invent or destroy words to a degree that only a few of us know what the hell he's talking about. Every mangled, destroyed, or invented word usually has a hilarious story behind it.

Sometimes, It depends on what words they say.

Like. Ownez, b****ez, n00b, and not using the shift key stuff like that. If they make a few spelling or grammar mistakes, it's fine. But I hate it when people are talking like they are on AIM.
