I smoked all though the 90's. It got up to 2 or 3 packs a week (a lot for me) when I finally quit. I quit cold turkey for my y2k new years resolution and I haven't had one since December 31st, 1999. Funny, now I think it's disgusting when I smell it even after 10 years of smoking myself.

Do you smoke? Are you trying to quit? Do you want to quit? Do you know anyone who has died of lung cancer? If you quit, how did you do it?

I have smoked since age 13. I am 42 years old. I have tried to quit numerous times but I have been unsuccessful. I have not tried the patch or Zyban, but I think I should since I'm so far gone. The guys who were at Batman Jones' happy hour can tell you that I smoke like a frikkin chimney, especially when I drink.

My question to you, drummer, is how did you handle your cravings when you quit? Did you have to stop drinking for a while?

Never smoked and never will. Sure Ive had a few here and there in college, but nothing like my friends.

Seems like all the girls I meet these days smoke..... kinda depressing. And the worst is kissing a chick who just had a smoke.... Id rather kiss the floor.

you must have seen "freddy vs jason". "gimme a break, it was a menthol."

anyway, i smoke the same kind as my dad... benson and hedges menthol lights. what's really really good is if you put one of those listerine breath strips on your toungue repeatedly until you finish the cigarette. good stuff!

    nobody likes quitters, drummer. ;)

Actually, it was easy for me. At the time, I had a very stressful job and stress seemed to make the cravings much worse. I found another job about the time I quit smoking, so there you go. I equated smoking with relaxing and relieving stress, so I just found other ways to do it....like drinking. :D

I've found that beer tastes better without smoking, so the "smoking only when I drink" option was never a problem for me.

Started when I was 15. Smoked Marl Reds till I was 19..switched to 100s till I was 25, have smoked the light 100s ever since.
I never smoked more than a pack and a half a day.

Tryed to quit numerous times over the years..I'm too weak.

My wife just quit 6 months ago after a heart attack. She used the patches for about a month.
She says that quitting is easy for her, everytime she had an urge for a smoke, she remembers almost dying in the hospital and seeing the worry and the pain of her family as they stood around and prayed for her to live.

Better than ANY stop smoking program in existence.

I hope to be able to quit for good soon, I aint getting any younger and I dont want to end up where she was for that week and a half.

Well, duh, we know he's gay....so is my brother. I was just asking if gayness and menthols go together.

    :D

I hate it when people edit their posts after I reply....should have hit "Reply with quote"

I have smoked a little bit but it has been like 4 years ago. I found it to be relaxing (once I finally figured out how to actually smoke the cigarette correctly!), but too many health problems, awful smells, and too much money deterred me from pursuing smoking any further.

However that has not stopped my sister or her husband and I have no idea how hard either one of them has tried to quit.

    I smoked 2 packs a day for 10 year myself. I haven't had a cigarette in 16 years now.

About the cravings - Remember that they won't be this bad for long or no one would quit. It get's better - much better - unfortunately it's starts out worse. Also, before I quit, I emptied my ashtrays into a sealable jar. Any time I had a bad craving, I'd go look at the jar. If that didn't work, I'd open the jar and take a wiff. Then sometimes, when I didn't have the jar around, I'd use good ole procrastination as my friend - "In 1 hour, I'll go get a pack". Next thing I know it's 3 hours later and I'm not craving.

EDIT: It's been 16 years not 6. I thought it seemed longer than that.

I've smoked since I was 16. Worst decision I've ever made was to start. Quit for 2-3 months several times, but always come crawling back during times of stress or whatever. I've gone from smoking Marl Reds, to Marl 100's to Camel Lights to Winston Lights to Marl Lights to finally Marl Ultra Lights (possibly an even "gayer" cig than menthols :D). Can't get any lighter than those, so I'm planning on quitting soon. Tried nic gum, was the nastiest tasting stuff...kinda like chewing on a cig butt. Maybe the patch...what's this Zyban stuff RMT?

With my coffee in the AM, after meals & while drinking are pretty much the only times I smoke. I wish they were healthy, because it's truly one of the most enjoyable things.

Smoking is stupid! Yeah we're all gonna die someday, but why speed up the process? Never smoked, never will.

ima_drummer, I quit right around when you did. I got you by a month: November 15th, 1999 was the last day I touched stogies.

I smoked Camel Lights, I saved the Camel Cash, I bought tobacco related stuff, all before i was 21!
i started as a kid, my older brother and my dad smoked. so i would snag a smoke or two every once in a while, then I was one of those kids that adults would see on the sidewalk smoking and they would tell me how bad it was. of course, i was a punk and i would unload all my angst on these people.

the day i quit, my friends and i were shooting a home movie called"Addiction: A Love Story" about a guy who smoked. that day, i must have smoked a whole pack straight for the movie. it made me sick, and that was it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again to anyone who needs advice on how to quit:

you simply DON"T SMOKE cigarettes. clear and simple.

if you can't beat a craving, then you really aren't committed to quitting.

yall do realize that "Lights" and "Ulta Lights" just refer to the flavor and not the heath level?
