No, but I would like some. Anyone giving away a canal house in Amsterdam, or another city in the Netherlands? My significant other has a bunch of relatives in that small, wonderful country, and we would spend several months of the year there if someone would just give us the property. :)-

Never had land or property but did rent a loft apartment for about a year because we were going down to Ajijic, Mexico quite a bit.

But now that I think about your query, I'd rather own a side of a mountain here in the states than anywhere else.

I have considered Uruguay and Chile as an offshore asset protection haven. Need a decently robust economy and enough detachment to the US economy to provide a good diversification.

I own real estate in Thailand.

Ownership law is crazy: Requirements = 51% Thai / 49% foreign ownership

I can never outright own the property, so me and a business partner created several LLCs and C-corps (in Delaware and Thailand) to co-own the property, and in turn offering me a higher %.

Don't ask me about the specifics, I won't even explain.

So, whats the benefit of owning land overseas vs buying something locally with the same moneys?

Just like stocks it could be that their economy was growing and ours was shrinking. Or there is no property tax so once you buy it, it's yours forever (assuming stable government). Whereas you have to pay yearly tax in the US. Or you plan to retire there. Or it's a location you can rent out easily.

Makes sense, I guess that no tax thing would be great.

Well, if you make any money off of your property (net gross sales or gains from the sale of property) the IRS requires this to be reported.

Also, you still have to pay the local taxes as well
