    OK, two questions:

    (1) What kind of car do you own?

    (2) Would you recommend it to others?

I am planning on getting something new and am just looking to see what people like / dislike. I have a Honda Prelude right now and will probably get a Nissan Pathfinder, but I thought I would see what other people's experiences with their vehicles are first. [IMG]

Shanna I have a 2000 Silverado 4x4 and I absolutely love it. I'm definetely a truck guy though. Constantly hauling something (mulch for example this past weekend). I also like big vehicles and like to see above traffic to see what's happening.
Only disadvantage is I only get about 15 miles/gallon in town, so it is pricey to fill up.
So yeah I love my truck and would recomment it.

1994 Chevy Suburban . . . yes, I do recommend it [IMG] But it eats gas like you wouldn't believe.

I have a 97 Nissan Maxima and absolutely love it. It hauls ass, and is reliable. I've put almost 100k on it and it has had only one problem that was not a regular maintenance type problem. The speedometer on it went out, but it was covered under the warranty. Outside of that, no problems.

The VQ30DE engine that it uses has been judged one of the 10 best by Ward's automotive for several years running. It's a beautiful engine -- both reliable and performs well.

I hear the new Maxima will have about 270 hp in it, but it may be a completely revamped car designed to compete against the likes of the Avalon (more upscale). If it's still sports-sedan in nature I'd buy it again. The new Altima will have a 240 or so hp engine in it, for its completely re-designed model later this year.

Just curious, but why are you moving up to a Pathfinder from a Prelude? Need more hauling or load capacity? The one thing I hate about SUV's is that they're expensive for what you get. I've considered getting one for my next vehicle, but I like to drive my car into the ground first. I'm hoping to get at least 150k-300k out of this car and with the way I'm driving it, that should happen ooooh about next month. lol. [IMG]

    Good luck!

1997 Honda Accord Special Edition (whatever that means). Sunroof, CD, etc. I've got about 47,000 miles on it but if memory serves I've only accounted for about 18,000 of those.

I like it a lot. I bought it in the summer of 1999 and it was a quantum leap from the dilapidated 1990 Nissan Sentra I'd been driving since high school.

Shanna, you're probably going to do pretty well when you sell that Prelude (I'm guessing it's the newer model, the post-1992 version...?) Those are pretty hard to come by. I shopped for one before I bought my Accord and the problem I ran into was that the Preludes are reliable, and the people who own them love them (so they're rarely for sale).

2001 Dodge Ram Ext. Cab. Yes, I would definitely recommend it.

I drive a 1996 Lexus ES-300 coach edition (coach leather & walnut interior), and I would definitely recommend owning one. It is a very smooth ride.

My Dodge doesn't even get the 13 mpg in the city that it claims to. It's more like 10 mpg. Maybe it's the way I drive......

WOW, that's really bad. The suburban gets 15 to 18 mpg, which is incredible considering it's a 4wd and I burn lots of gas accelerating -- yes, I do race in the Suburban . . . and I win sometimes.

I love both my vehicles. I would recommend both, but neither gets good gas mileage, and I am suffering now with the gas prices.

I have a 2001 NIssan Xterra, green! What a great vehicle this is. I could not be happier with it.

I also have a 1999 GMS Sierra ext. cab SLT. (This is my luxury vehicle, leather, heated seats, the works!) [IMG]

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger, and I like it.

I'd love a green Honda Prelude or a green Jeep Grand Cherokee if someone would take it off my hands.

I've got a small toyota truck about 6 years old. Toyotas absolutely rock! I've had not a single problem with it. I'm gonna run this sucka into the ground. You should look at toyotas for sure.

Just curious, but why are you moving up to a Pathfinder from a Prelude? Need more hauling or load capacity? The one thing I hate about SUV's is that they're expensive for what you get.

Two reasons. In 5 yrs of my 4-dr Saturn, I got 2 tickets. In 2 years of my Prelude, I've gotten 4 (I think) and I ended up with one on my record. I drive 90mph without thinking twice. So one reason is to slow me down... the other is to keep me from getting killed if I have a wreck. [IMG]

I also bought the car just because I wanted a sports car and only intended to keep it for 2 years, so I had it in my head that I was going to get a new car.. The two years are up, so now I want something new!

Why the SUV? I've always liked them -- not sure why. I'm tired of the 2-door thing & not being able to move ANYTHING and I figure if I'm going get 4 doors, I might as well get an SUV as opposed to a regular car (not sure why!).

those are pretty hard to come by. I shopped for one before I bought my Accord and the problem I ran into was that the Preludes are reliable, and the people who own them love them (so they're rarely for sale).

Yeah, I do love it. If I hadn't gotten it into my head that I wanted something new, I would be more than happy to keep it. I still may if I decide to save the money. And in terms of the value, I was amazed at how much value it's kept!

'97 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I absolutely love my Tonka truck!! I'm probably still gonna be driving this thing when I'm retired. Coming up on 60k miles and no significant probs yet.

The newer models aren't as raw as the old Jeeps (meaning they have a smoother ride and some nicer amenities) but they've still got the same toughness and top-down fun. The only recommendation I'd make as far as Jeeps are concerned: get the 6 cylinder engine - the 4's suck. Sorry, two recommendations: beef up the tires a little - the skinny factory ones just look silly.

Oh, and I get 20mpg - not too bad.

Nobody should ever, ever buy an SUV.

The tip 3x as much as cars, get worse gas mileage, and don't offer the off-road abilities that the manufactorers claim.

Don't be a philistine! Buy a car or truck.

haven, I've got to disagree w/ you on this one.
To start off, I have an Explorer and I love it.
They tip 3x more than cars:
Yes they do...but so do motorcycles, vans, buses, semi's, and yes, even trucks. Surely you don't think that these vehicles are useless and nobody needs to drive these either.
Bottom line, if you go buy an SUV thinking it's going to handle like a sports car, then you're an idiot and you deserve to get flipped.
Back to my Explorer thought...even though I don't drive my SUV like a race car, it does have suprisingly good handling when I need it.

    get worse gas mileage:
I will agree w/ you on this one. But I knew this going into my purchase. I weighed the benifits of good gas mileage and no room or towing capacity vs. bad gas mileage and plenty of room and towing capacity. Plus I like to drive a bigger vehicle...you can see further down the road than in most vehicles giving you more time for anticipating upcoming obstacles. Basically I think this comes down to personal preference/needs.

and don't offer the off-road abilities that the manufactorers claim:
Now, I really have to disagree w/ you on this point. When I bought my Explorer, the only claim that they made or even insinuated was a picture on the cover of their pamplet of the SUV going down a lone trail in the snow w/ a clever little caption. I can't remember offhand but it was something to the effect of 'don't you wish your car could do this'. And maybe I can give you a commercial or two (I don't remember seeing any, but that's not to say they didn't exist) w/ the SUV playing in the mud. Now, I don't know anything about the specific manufacturer or SUV you are basing this comment on , but mine can do all that Ford claimed and then some. I was in Lubbock for X-mas this past year. As soon as we got in town, it proceded to snow about 18". We had family scattered throughout town and everyone seemed to be trapped where they were...except, of course, for me. This was the first time I had taken it in the snow, so I didn't really know if it would handle it or not. I must say I was very, very impressed. Never once did it slip or slide. Now, this may not be of any concern to you, because how many times is it gonna snow in Houston? Especially 18" and stick for a couple of days! But, not all of the posters here live in Houston or any warm climate.

That's all I had to say. Basically I just didn't like you telling me what I should or should not drive. Whether that was your intension or not, I don't know. I mean I hate motercycles. I think they are death traps, but that is my opinion. I would never take a position saying that you or anyone else should never drive one.

    floyd:

Driving an SUV is simply irresponsible for everyone. I don't really care if they're more likely to tip, or if they cost you mroe in gas money.

It bothers me that they pollute my air, and aren't governed by the same standards as normal cars. SUV's typically serve in an urban environment, but since they're by law considered a utility vehicle, aren't governed by the stricter environmental regulations.

They pollute the environment, and make life worse for us all. Personally, I think that only people who absolutely require them should ever drive them. Otherwise, they're irresponsible.

I'm not telling you not to drive one; just that you're irresponsible and wrecking the environment if you do. Your "personal choice" shouldn't be able to ruin the world ofr the rest of us, which it is.

Those people that put the bumper stickers on SUV's that say "I'm changing the environment: ask me how" are my heroes.

    Have fun, global warmer.

99 sunfire, got it as an unexpected graduation gift, the car is a step up from the 86 chevy nova I used to roll around in.

The nova will always have a special place in my heart though, I miss having to tell the passenger in my car to just ignore the shaking of the doors when I go over 50.
