by only winning 1 regular season mvp. Karl Malone has 2 mvps and no rings to show for it. Just to through it out
Our team as a whole never got its due respect for our back-to-back championships. We did pretty bad in the regular season in 94-95, and I think that hurt Hakeem's chances. He is still the only player other than Jordan to earn both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same year.
You'd think that this was a Celtics fan web site with the way Rockets fans talk about the past...Move forward, people! Every Rockets fan knows who the real MVP in 1995 was, and that's all that matters...Hell, I'd bet that most Spurs fans would give it to Hakeem now, if they had the chance.
But you forgot.. Hakeem has 2 championships and 1 MVP to show for it and... Malone has 0 championships and 2 MVPs to show for it. Now which position would you want to be in?
But Hakeem practically grabbed the trophy from dave and shoved it up his...uh...Hakeem outplayed dave in the 95 playoffs. We'll leave it at that.
Hakeem was out for a significant portion of the season down the stretch in 95 as well...remember he and Max were out with anemia!!
Honestly, I think Hakeem deserved it in '93 when Barkley won it. Dream just didn't have the hype that Chuck did arriving in Phoenix.
Karl Malone should not have won the MVP in 1999. Duncan was clearly the man that year. Plus they beat the Jazz 2 of 3. Duncan got screwed out of the MVP in 1999, just like J-Kidd got screwed in 2002.
Barkley deserved that MVP award in 1993. They increased their win total by 9, and he led them to the NBA Finals, something they couldn't do before...
There were some great players back then. David Robinson, Barkley, Michael Jordan, etc. These are among the best players ever, so it's hard to argue with MVP awards, IMO. It's such a judgment call. Can't argue with rings, however.
He absolutely got burned. Hakeem was the best player in the NBA in 1993, but the voters went with the more popular Charles Barkley who was the top "story" in the NBA that season. Further proof that post season awards don't always go to the best player. I think the voters have gotten it right for the most part in recent years, but 1993 should have been the first of two MVP awards for Dream. We all know what Dream did to the Admiral in the 1995 playoffs, but with the Rockets finishing 6th in the west coming off their 94' championship, I can't blame the voters for giving the MVP to Robinson who did have the better year statistically on the team that finished with the best record in the NBA. That's why there's a regular season MVP and a post season MVP award though because while Robinson was the safe pick for regular season MVP, he doesn't even make the list for post season MVP that season. Like Duncan, and actually far worst than Duncan, you could never depend on Robinson to come through for you in the clutch and to me that is the mark of a great player, not gaudy stats in the regular season.
Maybe. But Barkley made Phx a pretender to contender. Olajuwon made the Rockets from avg to good to very good. I honestly don't think we were strong contenders.
