Do you find this self-censored Finnish comic strip offensive?

The biggest newspaper in Finland recently published and then consequently selfcensored this comic strip. Some print editions got out with it before censoring.

    Translation:

Berlin 1943: The guy on the right is picking up a a bar of soap, which reads as "Free-range Jew's soap".

I assume this is meant to be a parallel to the ethical issues in massproduction in the poultry industry nowadays.

So, how many people here find this offensive? Do you think the self-censorship was the right choice?

I find it tasteless and unfunny. I also think that "censored" is probably not the right word since they themselves decided to change their mind about publishing the comic strip. Thus, to be able to properly answer your poll, maybe you should qualify whether you mean self-censorship or governmental censorship as to the answers to your poll question.

    My answer would be:

I find it offensive, but no governmental censorship is needed, but it was a good (although too late) decision to decide not to publish it.

I don't find it funny, but I've never laughed at the work of any Finnish author I've read.

Is "censoring" the right word here? It seems more like the newspaper decided what standards are appropriate for its own publication, whereas the word "censor" implies somebody not being allowed to publish something when they want to.

I can certainly see why they decided not to run it, though. It seems like an unnecessarily provocative reference that as far as I can tell isn't related to the real subject of the cartoon.

Oops... I didn't see this before posting.

In that case I'm voting for "I find it offensive and censoring it was correct," but what I really mean is I find it unnecessary and choosing not to run it was a good idea.

    What does self-censorship really mean?

I wanted to post nude pictures of chubby women on my apartment door but then I decide not to. Did I just self-censor?

    Wikipedia puts it like this:

"Self-censorship is the act of censoring or classifying one's own work (blog, book(s), film(s), or other means of expression), out of fear or deference to the sensibilities of others without an authority directly pressuring one to do so. Self-censorship is often practiced by film producers, film directors, publishers, news anchors, journalists, musicians, and other kinds of authors."

    Win.

BTW I found it hilarious, but I'm told that my penchant for Nazi humor often makes me a horrible person.

(Just kidding I hate Nazis. I mean well you know not hate, not like LIKE / HATE though, like not even a little bit at all. Just prefer not to use the hate word so much because you'd think somewhere deep down there'd be some intrinsic value in SOME NAZI but who the **** knows so **** it)

Without reading the comic, I am convinced the guy is trying to buy a box of condoms... what does that say about my psyche?

I wouldn't consider it really "offensive". It is more like the practical preemptive application of Godwin's Law in the real world. It's an easy argument to make, and it is such a loaded subject that you immediately shut down any real discussion and instead (to steal from Marshall McLuhan) the medium of the analogy becomes the message. You end up not talking about the poultry industry, but instead whether it is appropriate to call someone a Nazi, or joke about Nazi's, etc.

They have the right to publish it, and to not publish it.....

Is anyone getting shot or threatened with their life over it?
