I know alot of guys that do it, and it has drawn my curiosity. Do any of you bet on games? I have NO idea on how to get started, even. How do you get started and where do you go? How long have you been doing it for? How much money do you bet and how much do you win/lose? Is anyone betting on the college games now that March Madness is here? Finally, does your wife/girlfriend/parents know that you bet?
Bet, as in Vegas? No. With friends of mine? Yes. Never for more than 20 bucks or so, though. I've got 10 bucks in a March Madness pot right now .
Yeah, I do it at time. Simplest way is on the internet (I use www.sportsbook.com ). From what I've learned, there's not really any set US law about the legality of offshore betting through the internet. That's not to say it isn't technically illegal under some random other law, but I'm presuming it is OK until someone tells me otherwise. Some advice, though: don't do it unless you have money to waste. REALLY don't do it if you have an addictive personality. On the plus side: It does add interest in watching some otherwise boring games. I know it made pro football season more interesting to me since that doesn't interest me otherwise too much. On the negative side: It's addictive. I've been lucky to basically win as much as I lose, so I'm not really losing (or winning) anything, but I did early and the temptation was there to put more in to "win it back" which is just not a good idea. It's also very easy -- takes a few seconds to make a bet. This makes it tempting to bet on things you really have no business betting on. If you DO get involved, just make sure you're good at money management or you can very easily lose some real money in the end. It's like gambling, except that you honestly feel you're smarter than the oddsmakers, so you're even more tempted to try to win.
Thanks for taking time to really put thought into it MAJOR. But if you bet online, dont you have to put up a credit card to sign up? How else would they made sure you paid if you lost? Another thing i thought about...its not like you can look up bookies in the phone book right? LOL I mean, how can anyone call a bookie to get more info? Is it more like "word of mouth kinda thing?
the reason why I was so curious about this is because of this guy I heard on espn radio talking about how he is right 90% of the time on all of his picks. I called just for fun; as I am new to this and have no clue about it, and he gave me five picks and they were all right. Of course, I dont know how to even contact a bookie, much less make a bet, but had I bet, I would have won big. My question is simple. If this guy is 90% right, why wouldnt everyone listen to him, quit their job, make millions and retire next week? I know its not that easy, but he was right on all 5 games. They werent exactly easy games either. Bowling green vs Ball State? UCLA over Cincinnati? Siena over Alcorn St. Not exactly easy games to predict. Anyway, can someone tell me why everyone couldnt get rich literally overnight?

Whoever he is, he isn't right 90% of the time, unless he pads it by just picking winners (Maryland over Siena, etc) instead of doing it against the spread. If he was right that often, he wouldn't be on ESPN radio -- he'd be very rich somewhere. He probably just got lucky with you on those 5 picks. But if you bet online, dont you have to put up a credit card to sign up? How else would they made sure you paid if you lost? Yeah, you have to deposit money into an account you create with them. Wire transfer, credit card, paypal, whatever. And then you can withdraw it anytime you want. Another thing i thought about...its not like you can look up bookies in the phone book right? LOL I mean, how can anyone call a bookie to get more info? Is it more like "word of mouth kinda thing? I'd assume you can look them up in Nevada. It's illegal to be a bookie anywhere else in the US, I believe.
I'm sorry I made it sound like this guy works for ESPN...in all actuality, it was a commercial on espn radio having nothing to do with the show...only that he is right 90% of the time. I dont remember his name at the moment but his phone number is 1-800-681-PLAY If you get a chance, major, call it p and see what you think.
I'm into sports wagering, in fact I do it as a form of supplemental income. Like Major, I use www.sportsbook.com in addition to many others and I highly recommend it. They've got lines for NBA, NCAA, NHL, and of course MLB and NFL when they start. If you post your e-mail here I can send you a LOT of information on how to get started and maximize your success, as it is really easy to lose your money if you're on your own. red
By the way... NEVER believe a guy who claims to be able to hit 65% of his picks or better, at least against a point spread. That is TOTAL B.S. that he hits 90% of his picks. Think about it, if he could pick 90% why isn't he betting on these games himself, instead of peddling radio listeners who don't know better? Also , never ever pay for picks. You're better off flipping a coin to decide who wins than paying $20 to some bozo who probably would be lucky to hit 50% himself. Trust me... if you could consistently pick even 55% winners (much harder than it sounds) against the spread in NBA, NCAA or NFL, you could retire in no time.
