In the most recent issue of Men's Health they polled men on this question. 39% said they believe in hell. I was curious.. knowing that this D&D forum in mainly proliferated by men what you had think about it. Of course, women as always are encouraged to particapate.

Hell is a mental state, not a physical one. It's something you have to create in your own head.

In terms of a place you goto after you die for being bad - no. I think that's as likely as the tooth ferry. It's obviously a methaphor.

I believe that when you die, you die. That's it. It may be bleak, but it is what it is. And I'm 100% okay with that.

What's the tooth fairy a metaphor for?

I believe in hell, and I believe that Bud Selig is going there.

If we are talking about the same "Christian" idea of hell maybe there is something lost in translation.

You will never go to hell for "being bad"

Even though what Bud Selig did was uncalled for. I choose to forgive and forget. I don't want anyone to "go to hell" literally.

But do I think Selig shouldn't be brought under investigation for this and other situations that have occurred under his tenure is a different story.

I guess that assumes a state of permanent consciousness. It'd be nice to see my dead loved ones again, but at that point, I'd no longer be human or share any of those mortal feelings I had before.

So would it matter? Would hell be in some permanent form of ghostly emotional torment? Seems like a pretty cruel punishment for the actions upon a blip in time.

I like thinking about religion for its intellectual potential, but for the biggest things to be resolved down into a carrot and stick metaphor and realizing that it does work very very well when we or a loved one is sick or near death makes me wonder how much have humanity has progressed and how much drama and baggage we're not willing to leave behind.

    I think we go somewhere.

Whether that's the Christian (or whatever religions) perception of hell, I don't know and don't really care.

I like to think the Hitlers, Pol Pots, and bin Ladens of the world get their comeuppance in the end.

I believe hell is on earth and people reach hell due to their karmic actions. For example, children starving in Africa are in hell. Why are they there? Because they led a bad life in their previous life.

Hell is something people made to scare other people into following them.

Very well, then by what do you define a "bad life"?

No, not really. When I die my energy and lifeline will be passed on and reincarnate in the form of a carrot or ant or something...just to be eaten or squashed by a bigger more predatory living being, and then I'll be passed onto something else...if my energy can't be created or destroyed I guess my life can be treated the same way.

Really it doesnt matter either way. The world can be very cruel and unfair. If it takes a belief in a bogus religion or deity to get through life & to make sense of it all, if its to your benefit good for you. Living a lie isnt as bad as people claim it is ;) There very well might be no hell or heaven but WHO CARES, as long as we feel good while we're still alive without harming anyone else.

I'm glad you see it that way, cuz all wall street traders are sentenced to Somalia in the next life.
