Polls: Obama at 48 percent approval at 500 day mark

Washington (CNN) - As President Barack Obama marks 500 days in the White House, a new average of the most recent national polls indicates that less than half of the public approves of the job he's doing in office.

According to a CNN Poll of Polls, 48 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama's doing, with 45 percent saying they disapprove of the president's performance. This stands in sharp contrast to Obama's popularity after his first 100 days in office, which was at 63 percent in a CNN Poll of Polls compiled for that occassion.

There wasn't much of a choice on who to vote for, but I think I am disappointed by Obama. He campaigned on change, but it seems like a lot of the same old crap.

Here are my major problems with him:
    War in Iraq
    Justice dept shenanigans
    Not being tougher on banks
    Health care
Oil issue - I know it is bp fault

    Good things:
The bailout - except for certain parts
Health care - It isn't great but better then nothing
I guess he is adding some jobs

Sure. The bailout alone is an admirable accomplishment for his first 500 days and he's got a lot more promised.

I voted neither. With the federal government as big and powerful as it is it will always be run poorly. It does not matter who is in office.

I voted "yes". Didn't know I could vote "neither". Obama shows promise. He needs to stop being so afraid of offending big oil, big finance and the military industrial complex. I also think he got too enamored with the elitists he met in the Ivies. Obama is in a tough spot as if he does take on the corporations, many of the poor teabaggers will accuse him of being a communist, though it is the only way he can really employ the government more effectively to help the teabaggers with their declining living standards which I think is the root of much of their racism and certainly their distrust of government.

I'm not American, but I would say he's doing a great job with international relations. I am annoyed with his lame view on the flotilla issue, but that's probably my bias, and to be fair he seems to be doing far far better than I thought he would.

48 percent puts him in excellent position to be reelected. 50 percent is the magic number and tens of millions in campaign money will get him there easily.

That's who he is imo. On every contentious issue he'll wait to see what the political climate is, and eventually take the path of least resistance/maximum convenience in "getting something done".

Timing is important too. Wait too long on every issue and you appear weak. Not to mention decisive action is sometimes crucial.

So is he supposed to be making political decisions or the right decisions?

I am so happy we have a pragmatic, thoughtful and informed president

As the economy continues to deteriorate, his chances of getting re-elected will dwindle. But no worries, they'll just replace him with another puppet anyways.

The problem is his eagerness to compromise and maintain poll numbers at the expense of making real changes that would be effective. Apart from securing nuclear material/reducing nuclear arms, I honestly don't know if he has a real opinion on anything.

I'm more skeptical. I think he has no interest in taking on big oil, big finance and the military industrial complex, and would rather not do anything if he didn't have to. If opposing groups make enough noise, he'll throw them some scraps and call it bi-partisan compromise.

Taking on big oil and big finance require walking a tightrope. If you regulate too heavily or in the wrong way, it will cause the price of fuel to go up and will put some of a freeze into the consumer credit market. Neither of these things is good for the average Joe living paycheck to paycheck.

In other words, it could backfire.

I don't disapprove of Obama himself, but I am highly critical of his policies and approach to government. I am not saying he should bend like a reed in the wind to public sentiment, but he apparently is not smart enough to listen to and balm the fears of a huge segment -- if not an outright majority -- of the populace.

Those "fears" are the direct result of your group of Republican cynics masquerading as a grass-roots movement who insist on filling the impressionable minds of a "huge segment" of the populace with misinformation and outright lies. The only way to "balm the fears" of a group of people who has been told, for example, that their taxes went up (when they didn't) is to tell the truth. Obama has done and continues to do that. Your group continues to spread lies to the contrary.

    You must be very proud.

Whether that is a positive or not is debatable, but the Bush administration proposed the bailout, wrote much of the bill, and Bush signed it. Obama did vote for it, but I think this is a vote on approval for President Obama, not Senator Obama.
