Do the Rockets win Game 3 vs Lakers with Yao not playing at all?

No, this isn't an "Are we better without Yao" thread in disguise. We don't win a single road game in the postseason without him.

But just think about how well we played LA at home in Game 4 and 6 when Yao didn't play at all. Isn't it pretty safe to say that team would've also won Game 3 without him? The evidence is pretty damning.

We played three home games vs the Lakers. 1 with Yao, 2 without Yao.

The one game with Yao: Rockets lose 108-94.

Two games without Yao: Rockets win 99-87 and 95-80. Game 4 was a blowout the whole way and Game 6 was a blowout at the start and end.

It's funny thinking about what everyone said about the Lakers after they won Game 7. Reality is had we just won that Game 3 home game, we'd win in 6 and would be playing the Nuggets right now. You can't really blame Adelman for not recognizing we'd be better at home without him, but it's kind of unfortunate to think it's reality.

So I guess the question I'm asking is are we better without Yao... at home against the Lakers? The evidence says yes. What are your opinions?

what evidence? that we're 2-0 at home vs. the lakers and 0-1 without? what about the portland series? what about all the home games we won in the regular season with yao? your 3-game sample is rather "damning".

    You're assuming the Rockets would've won 4 and 6.

The sample is not only too small but flawed as well. I think the OP is assuming that we needed Yao to get past Portland, but there is no evidence that we would have won Game 3. Every game is different,it's possible that the Lakers might have been able to make successful adjustments irrespective of how we played in Game 4 and 6,even if we assume that we would have won Game 4 and 6.

No, because even with Yao out of the lineup, the Rockets were horrible if I remember Game 3 right. Didn't we have Over ten turnovers in the first half of that game?

We were playing like crap that entire game and everyone except Landry with 10 points was shooting 50% or less. Not having Yao might have gotten some people to play harder but its a mute point.

Rockets play completely different without Yao. Yao Ming's presence without a doubt played a huge factor in our crappy performance in Game 3. The first game we played without Yao was our best in that series, because EVERYBODY thought we were done. If anything, the assumption is we would win Game 6?

    yeah maybe.

Morey himself pointed to game 3 as the "if we had won that game..." game.

Houston was ahead in the first half. No one knew Yao was hurt and he badly missed a number of turn arounds and dunks around the basket in the 3rd quarter including getting facialized in a block by Kobe Bryant. After that the team basically fell apart, Brooks and Artest jacking shots for the rest of the game and Artest never got his shot back the entire series.

It's hard to project because all the variables but if you're going to speculate game 3 is the game you do it about. It's at home. A more supportable statement is that if Yao hadn't gotten hurt they would have won the game... which is supported by actual gameplay in game 3 and not pure speculation.

    there's lot of hypotheticals:

    1) if deke hadn't gotten hurt would Yao have gotten hurt
    2) if refs hadn't ejected Artest game 2 would Houston have won game 2
    3) if Yao had pulled himself from the game when he first felt his ankle go would he have suffered that fracture

    etc etc etc etc etc

A fully healthy Yao would of won game 3. I thought they should of won game 2, but the refs gave LA that one.

    Another what-if ?

My what-if: if we give more encouragement to Rox players instead of criticism, will they perform better?

We threw two teams at the Lakers this series

The Yao Rockets lost 1 to 2

the "underdog" Rockets went 2 to 2

i was a firm believer that we would've won game 3 without Yao, and we would've won game 2, had Yao stayed on the bench in the 2nd half.

All i know is the Yao Rockets would've lost against the Lakers in 5 games.

but I would be really intrigued to see how the "underdog" Rockets would've done.
