Do the Rockets have an interest in Cadillac Anderson?

From today's ESPN Insider about Sean Kemp, Oliver Miller and Greg Anderson working out with John Lucas in Houston:

However, the most intriguing story may be Anderson's. The 37-year-old big man hasn't played organized basketball since he was arrested in 1997. When he was in the league, "Cadillac" was a serviceable big man who once averaged 13.7 points a game for San Antonio.

Anderson was arrested and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute. Anderson, who picked up the nickname "Cadillac" while he was in college because he rode a bike around campus, was caught in a federal sting operation after he agreed to pick up some cocaine as part of a drug deal.

"They caught me red-handed," said Anderson at the time. "I could have said, 'No.' I could have stopped this. But I didn't."

After serving time in a half-way house, Anderson started his own trucking company. This summer, however, he looked around, saw a dearth of NBA big men and decided now was the time to come back.

He had a long way to go. Then close to 290, he's been working all summer and is a lithe 265 at the moment.

"I've learned a lot the last couple of years," Anderson told Insider. "I figured it was time for me to find the real Cadillac. I'm a good guy, a guy who comes to work everyday, a guy who is dedicated and great in the locker room. Sometimes in life you slip away . . . forget about the things that matter. I've learned my lesson and I think those lessons can help me provide veteran leadership to a team in need of a big man."

Those who have watched him play tend to agree.

"He's working hard to get himself back, no question" Lucas told Insider. "The skill level is still there. He knows how to play, which for a big man is a premium."

"Mentally he's really prepared," the NBA scout who has watched him play all summer told Insider. "He's setting screens, getting guys involved. He knows how to play, which is more than you can say about a lot of the young guys in the league. I think he'll get an invite to a camp this fall. It's got to be the right situation, but he'll be a real serviceable center for someone."

Anderson's agent, Lamar Holt, told Insider that he's talked with the Rockets, Pacers and Sonics about Anderson. He says that the level of interest has been strong and he expects Anderson to be in a NBA camp this fall.

Why would that be great? He is 37 years old, hasn't played in a number of years and is a convicted former cocaine dealer.

If he truly is in great shape, we couldn't be any worse off than Cato. John Lucas is a former druggie and the rocks gave him a second chance. Why not Cadillac?

How tall is Caddy? I thought he was a power forward (which the Rockets don't need) rather than a center. Would he better than Pig or Othella Harrington?

Cadillac is either 6'10" or 6'11". I can't remember which but he played center the whole time in the league.

He could be good for garbage minutes.

Cadillac played center and I always liked the way he played. Of all the professional athletes who have ever been caught doing something illegal, Cadillac is the only one I recall who took responsibility for his actions. I think he'd do alright here.

Unless he's grown, Cadillac was 6'9" in his playing days.

I am intrigued over what he might be able to bring to the floor, unlike some knuckleheads who assume they already know.

Even in his prime I'm not sure Cadilac would be a good fit for this team....at 37, yeah right!??

I thought Greg Anderson broke numerous Federal laws when he became involved in drug trafficking!?

I think you all are forgetting the contributions of one Charles Jones. :D Old centers aren't necessarily bad to come off the bench, and they easily become fan favorites.
