Do Delis Normally Give Breadsticks or Some Sort of Free Bread With Their Salads?

I am befuddled by this. I get at least a few customers a week who literally get mad at me because I don't give them breadsticks or a slice of bread with their salad. I've never been to a deli or cafe that gave you free breadsticks or slice of bread without me asking and paying for one. Is this a NY thing? Are Houston sandwich places serving their salads with breadsticks or bread slices?:confused:

I know in the NY area, many delis place a basket of bread on the table before the main meal comes out, and I'd assume Houston based delis do the same.

But it really doesn't matter to me whether restaurants do it or not.

I just find it odd that people expect the same thing when they are ordering takeout.

It's just a misconception or a misunderstanding. Perhaps as a courtesy, you should say what the entire order, including the meal, contains. If they don't hear "and bread sticks", they can then ask, but you did go over what you give in the order.

Depends on the establishment and what services they provide.

Well, there must be a reason why they expect that. If enough are complaining, then other places must be doing it.

A very popular salad/deli type establishment in nyc midtown near my office offers a quarter slice of a pita bread with salads. They chop the salad, put it in a to go container, put one slice of pita on top, close the container, and off you go.

Haven't seen it elsewhere in nyc, though so it may not be a "ny thing".
