[DIY] Looking for local, weekend, hands-on workshops

i'm growing tired of my routine and looking to light up a new hobby. i've always been interested in DIY projects and TV, but never had the money to burn on one-time-use tools or home improvement projects.

does anyone know of weekend seminars, workshops, or community groups that encourage hands-on participation? the home depot and lowe's ones aren't exactly the right match... i'm looking for welding, metal fab, woodworking... etc. hobby-type activities. hcc and lonestar seem to only offer trade school/weekday things. thanks!!!
